Input from people who weren’t there is pointless & irrelevant, and only serves to add fuel to a fire which has been burning for too long.

Too bad it didn't cross Obama's mind a few days ago. It would have avoided a lot of aggravation and embarrasment all around.

It's funny that the only one coming out ahead is Gates, who is starting to sound a lot like Tawana Brawley to me. It's well known axiom that in academics, it's publish or perish. Methiks he stumbled on subect matter for his next project and milked it for all it's worth.

Remember, Gates not only knows how to play the race card well enough to teach it, he's got a whole deck of 'em and can do card tricks with it.

This story reminds me of one, several years back; Denny's restaurants
(a nationwide franchise)
Allegedly: Denny's was accused of racism, and had pending lawsuits, for not serving blacks, making them wait for service, etc.

The situation was exploited in the media, just like the one with Prof Gates.

Over time, false accusations spread nationwide, with people trying to extort anything from a free meal, to money.

Denny's finally wised up and installed hidden cameras.
When the next false accusation of racism and lawsuit was threatened, Denny's produced the video tape, and the accusations, and lawsuits miraculously stopped.
It's too bad, behavior like this ruins it for the people that are truly victimized.

Police are obligated to help those in need. Not because they have good hearts, but because they're professionals being paid to do so. Many officers have lost their job or worst with the mentality you suggest above.

I'm glad he did. I didn't see the need for him to stick his nose in, but he did. At least he's man enough to admit when he's wrong; unlike our previous POTUS who could do no wrong.

After portraying Professor Henry Gates as a victim of racial profiling on Thursday, on Friday’s CBS Early Show, co-host Harry Smith reported:

"We are learning more about the arresting officer...this is the guy hand-picked to help teach recruits how not to racially profile. This is a guy who helped try to save the life of [late Boston Celtics basketball player] Reggie Lewis."

A report by correspondent Bianca Solorzano further informed viewers:

"It turns out the arresting white officer was actually hand-picked by a black police commissioner to have him teach recruits how to avoid racial profiling...Sergeant James Crowley, an 11-year veteran of the force, is an expert on racial profiling, having taught a course at the police academy."

In addition, Solorzano’s report featured clips of an interview with Sergeant Crowley:
"I acted appropriately. Mr. Gates was given plenty of opportunity to stop what he was doing. He didn't...There was a lot of yelling. There was references to my mother, something you wouldn't expect from anybody that would be – should be grateful that you're there investigating the report of a crime in progress, let alone a Harvard University professor."

This is the issue I have a problem with. Since when is it a crime to yell and insult people in your own home? It doesn't matter whether that person is wearing a badge or not. Bottom line, both the professor and officer took things personally. The Professor should have kept his mouth shut about racial issues and the officer should have kept his ego in check.

Frankly, I don't see where the officers ego was a problem. I think it was his skin coor.

On the flip side, if he didn't address this issue, you'd have a lot of people wondering why he didn't.

When those people spoke out, wondering why POTUS didn't say anything, we would have identified a few more idiots.

The Police need to take command of any situations they're in, ASAP and this usually is done by being very assertive and direct, raising their voice so there's no doubt about what they say. Gates' neighbor reported a possible B&E, which the PD responded to. Gates, by his own admission, insulted Crowley's mother, refused to come out when ordered to and acted in a manner that is far from what I would expect from a college professor. However, he did exactly what I would expect from someone who resisted any form of authority in the '60s and I fully believe he's on the far Left side of the political aisle. If Gates is such an intellectual, why didn't he have a plan in case he locked himself out? People do it all the time and he should have thought of this. His neighbors didn't know who was trying to get in? What does that say?

IMO, the cop should have left the scene when everything turned out copacetic. Being a loud mouth shnook in your own house doesn't deserve to get you arrested. I will wait any further judgment until the full story comes out. Which we all know it won't.

Couple that with my less than stellar love for LEO's, well I will simply let sleeping dogs lie.

Disorderly conduct and interfering with a police investigation could have both been charges brought against the professor and neither of them have stipulations that say it cannot happen inside a residence. According to what I've read the professor wasn't arrested until he followed the officer outside his house where he continued to act like anything but a scholar at one of the most pristine universities in the nation.

What you have to realize is that if an officer is called to a scene most departments require there personnel to gather information for reporting purposes even if after the initial investigation revealed there wasn't a crime committed.

They weren't brought because there was no case. When a DA realizes there's no case it means two things; the police didn't do enough or messed something up.

I can imagine what was the officer was probably feeling. He was approaching an unknown situation that's potentially dangerous. Knocks on the door and finds someone inside who is rattled, but eventually proves he's the owner of the residence.

I can also imagine the professor coming home from a trip to China. He realizes he's locked out of his house; finally gets in. Now a white cop similar in appearance to one that probably abused you at some point in the past knocks on your door and asks you to identify yourself in your own home which you finally do after letting off a bit of steam. You ask the cop for his name and badge number and get a refusal.

I'd hope we'd all have issues with the prof's attitude from the get go.
The sergeant was making sure the Prof was indeed the home owner, and asked to see ID.
Called to a home that was previously broken into.

The way the law is written, the professor didn't comply with the sergeant's requests, during the investigation.
And the investigation isn't over until the law says it is. What can I tell you? Like it or not the legal system, "is what it is."

I hope an audio tape of this comes out. As mark mentioned earlier, this Gates has Tawana Brawley written all over him.

Supposedly it exists, but the police still won't release it. To me that indicates there's something to hide. But who knows, you could be right.
