Coen, right.

Oups! I did forgot Roman (Polanski)! Sorry.

Jeunet? He's just still too "jeune" (young). But with Amelie and Delicatessen...
And City of Lost Children...

David Fincher, Michael Mann...

Oh, I understood that, but I feel the same way about a number of names on your list as it is. We'll end the hijack here. Thanks though.

So, I just pulled the trigger for my July movies. :D

The 400 Blows, Criterion Bluray
For All Mankind, Criterion Bluray
The Matrix, Bluray
Grand Prix (1966), HD-DVD

Total price shipped is $67. :)

the last is my first HDDVD purchase since The Pianist (which I finally got sick of waiting on for the BD release).

I got suckered into Grand Prix after rereading the HTWWW thread I had linked in another thread. :D

THANKS ALL! :)

I am fluent in French ...
That explains it then.

400 Blows is not a pornographic film! :p
I'm out. :D

I got to reading something here at AH and Netflixed The Third Man. It wasn't like my favorite thing ever but kind of cool just to know what it is. That whole 'film noir' (?) thing is a little artsy fartsy for my crowd but like I said it's kind of neat. Now I have seen a couple of different versions of The Man Who Fell to Earth (I think). I also read the book some 30 years ago or so. The film makers took some serious liberties with a sex scene I seem to recall.

Based on this thread alone I ordered The Seventh Seal and sort of expect it to suck but I figure it'll help to sort of make me less of a barbarian.

The whole Polanski thing has me a little perturbed because of his pleading guilty to the boffing of a 13 year old and then fleeing the country. Off with his prick I say. That's just me though.

I never studied it. In fact, I had an Italian dictionary on me when I installed myself in that country.

Do you consider the Coen Bros artsy fartsy as well? Just curious on your thoughts.

Please tell me what you think of it. :)

I understand your sentiment. Pretty messed up. Nevertheless, I enjoy his movies very much. Same thing with some old music composers, for instance one that I like very much, Gesualdo, killed his wife (and her lover). I still really enjoy his music, and perhaps it's strange that I do even when knowing he was a murderer. Crime of passion, but still.

Not really. Maybe The Man Who Wasn't There but these guys are mainstream quirky in my book. I didn't know who they were until I just Googled them. I think that they are good old fashioned film makers with a wide assortment of film types. I really liked Raising Arizona and Fargo. Although wildly different both had something in them that left a lasting impression on me. Namely the Randy 'Tex' Cob (?) character and that line about there being more to life than a little bit of money.

Artsy fartsy would be Felini, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and old black and whites.

I'm down with the justifiable homicide. Bang my wife ... but it's gonna cost ya. :D

Since I have your ear and I know you like Bach, is there some concert DVD stuff that you could recommend on Netflix?

Jamie,
Forget it bro. Stick with porn and Rambo. :D

I dunno, Jamie. Most of these movies are like eating raw oysters (with extra grit). Ya gotta develop a taste for them. Meat has. I definitely haven't. (I think you have to be a whole lot smarter than me or Alex to appreciate them. ;))

Like the man said, I don't know art but I know what I like.

Seriously, for anyone interested in weird foreign films, check out The Saragossa Manuscript, Alphaville, El Topo, Sweet Movie and That Obscure Object of Desire.

There's another really whacky French film who's name I've forgotten that was the French take-off of Close Encounters of a 3rd Kind, but much weirder. I remember watching it in High School and wondering just how much LSD one needed to do before they could appreciate the work!

These ones. :D:D:D It's called enjoying life, the most important lesson that a man and a woman can learn (or any other type of animals for that matter). :D
Oh man. And I thought that your were gonna tell us that there was a school for learning how to enjoy camp movies. Nuts. ;)

Which reminds me...speaking of skills...Life is like a box of chocolates.....:D

Nah- this was too weird even for Truffaut. Reminded me a little bit of watching The Wall, but with aliens.

Alex, I've only seen two Bach videos, believe it or not. I think. Well, I've watched footage/interviews of Gould as well, but not a full concert by any means. Hm, I think that's it though.

This is a DVD of some old brothers performing the masterpiece known as the Musical Offering.

They are Belgian, IIRC. I've seen it only once; I do not own it. I highly recommend it for the performance. FYI, the Benelux area, and perhaps most specifically Holland, is known for historically excellent performers of Baroque music. I don't know how much of this tradition stemmed directly from what is known as the "Franco-Flemmish" school, where, IMO, the most beautiful vocal music was ever written in the history of the world.

Guess how I found/bought my favorite Cello Suites recording. It had a sticker on it that said, "Made In Holland". No joke, never heard of the performer. I really like Heinrich Schiff! (though Austrian born.)

The BD I own is this, the Brandenburg Concertos:

The size and instrumentation changes from one work to another. I will say, visually, the hall is beautiful. I will also say, that a couple of the female performers are much more pleasurable to look at, compared to the old men performing the Musical Offering. You can click on the little vid that Amazon provides here, but the BD will look about nine million times better, of that you can trust me. It might still be just 1080i, I think, and it seems that this is common with classical concerts. But, at least it's still hi-def, and while coming from a guy w/o SACD capability, classical BDs in general offer the best mch I've ever heard.

Almost forgot, make sure to select 2.0 PCM with the Musical Offering DVD. When in doubt, always choose the lossless stereo over lossy mch for classical DVDs. On the above, I do remember trying both, and it was no contest. This is why I have great hope for BD concerts.

I wish this French movie was available as Region 1 DVD, let alone on a BD. Highly recommend, very quirky, different,, and quite comedic.

EDIT: btw, it seems we've finally found our resident AH classic movie gurus:

aberkowitz and Jim.

^ Are you looking for Classics or Foreign Movies?

And I guess on DVD is also fine (doesn't have to be on Blu-ray?).

And are you into Classical Music? OK, I know you are, but on the multichannel SACD format,
DVD-Audio format, Blu-ray format, HD DVD format, DVD format or CD format?

I happen to have an extensive collection of Classic and Foreign movies.
I also happen to have a sizeable collection on Classical Music from all formats.

I grew up with Classical music (vinyls, or albums, or LPs if you prefer).
Johann Sebastian Bach is also one of my favorite dead composer, alongside Beethoven, Mozart...
