One other thing I forgot to mention is this is a new old stock. It has never been out of its original boxes.:D

The shipping ended up being $150 bucks. Ouch.

Any thoughts on this question:

Does anyone think it will be an issue having the sub that far behind (18") the front speakers? I plan on making the cabinet as close to the size of the sub as possible and creating a grill from fabric that matches my walls.

I really don't think so, but that's just my semi-educated guess.

At 80 Hz you are talking about waves that are 169.5” long and at 20 Hz they are 678”. 18” is a proportionally small number when you are talking about waves of this size, but this all might be faulty logic on my part.

I would think that time correction (distance) in your pre/pro would take care of this, but there may be others issues that I am ignorant of.

Thanks Ryan. I am thinking the same thing but just want to verify. I'm going to do some measurements for the box in the coming days. I will add these materials into what I have to get for the riser so it goes unnoticed.;)

Telling the wife is easy. Go to your local pool builder, give him 45k and show your wife what you bought her. Works like a charm

No problem Craig. As for the distance issue I stand by my original thoughts.

However after thinking about your larger plan a little bit further there may be some issues with placing the sub into a cabinet built into the wall. Personally I would be concerned with boundary gain issues generated by placing the sub in a built-in structure. I would assume that this is really going to emphasize certain frequencies…but Audyssey XT in your pre/pro may be able to overcome much of this so it may be a moot point.

However I would be concerned with the possibility of causing resonance in the wall itself.

I wish I had these (possible) problems to think about for my own system…:p

Very good points. One of the selling points that snell lists is that it is "designed" to fit into built-in cabinets. I will go through the manual and see what it has for compensation for the issues you describe.

I know one thing I will have to make sure is that the ports have enough breathing room. The review I read says you can feel them moving air from 6+ feet away. I don't think the wife would go for me not using some kind of grill.

Maybe I'll email snell and see what they say about design specs for a built-in install.

There is one thing going for you.

You have a THX certified pre/pro and the Snell is a THX certified sub. If you look in the speaker setup section of your Onkyo, you’ll find specific THX settings. There you’ll find a boundary compensation setting that THX says that you can only use with THX subs, probably due to the fact that they have a known frequency response that follows their specs.

Excellent. I do remember seeing the THX setting in the menu I just never went into it to see what was there.

Thanks again.

It just stinks I won't get to play with it for a few weeks.:(

I just got my tracking number and it will be here before I leave so maybe I will at least hook it up at work and see what it does in our conference room. I put a little 506 for our AV needs so at least I can make sure it is not DOA while I wait to bring it home.

The moster has arrived!:D

I forgot how heavy 140lbs was fortunately my hernia did not. Ouch.

I know walk it off...

Someone borowed my camera. So no pics which stinks. I unboxed it and tested it. New as the day it was born and in perfect condition even with UPS's help.

So now I have to box it back up and let it sit until I get back.:(

I guess at least it got here safe. We purchased a new table for our dining room and the top was damaged. They sent the replacement which came today and it is damaged as well. Does everything that is shipped have to get dropped.

I’m done with this thread; jealousy just doesn’t sit well with me:D

Seriously, though I’m glad to hear it made intact…140lbs, guess you wont be moving it very often;).

My birthday was over the weekend so I thought there was no better time to break it to the wife that I bought this beast. Best yet she even helped me carry it down to the theater.

I have not had a full chance to put it through its paces but early thoughts are this is WAY better than my little LFM-1. I will post some pics tonight and I have Push to watch to check it out.

I love new toys!:D:cool:

Here are a couple of pics.

This pic is of the Outlaw LFM-1 and the Snell. The Outlaw is a bottom firing so I tipped it up to see the driver.

Here is one just of the Snell.

Just to give a point of reference the drivers are 12" and the cabinet is 29" high. Having this is in my system is a huge change. It has added an amazing bottom end that I did not know existed. This is my first bigboy sub.
