Last year I spent several months trying various A/V receivers when I upgraded to bluray and a new plasma TV. I tried an Onkyo 606, Denon 988, and a Yamaha 663 and ultimately ended up with the Yamaha RX-V663 as I felt it gave the best performance for the money. I decided to switch to a different receiver after I changed my home theater setup and began to route everything to the tv via 1 HDMI cable. The Yamaha's video processing on HDMI sources was fine, but other analog sources were seriously degraded when converted to digital. So my search began again, bringing me to the 1910:

I am flat out blown away by this receiver. The main reason I wanted it was for the Audyssey processing. The only thing I was in love with on the Onkyo 606 I tried out was the Audyssey dynamic EQ. The 988 I demoed did not have it but the 1910 does and it is worth every penny. I have 2 small kids and even though my theater room is 2 floors below, I obviously can't listen at reference volumes. Audyssey dynamic EQ along with Dynamic Volume is a knockout combo. The bass response up front and sound from the rears is jaw dropping at lower levels. I would pay much, much more just for this feature. Last night I listened to Goo Goo Dolls live from Buffalo DVD and I heard things I never heard in the mix before. Every strum on the guitar and bass line was alive and distinct. Drums thumped and vocals were crystal clear. I also watched Live Free or Die Hard on bluray and the surround effect at -35db on the volume was nothing short of spectacular. Speaking of spectacular, the Audyssey auto setup nailed everything perfectly. I have a 6.1 Jamo surround setup consisting of 4 matched satellites, a larger center, and a smaller rear center. The 1910 has independent crossover levels for each speaker, unlike my Yammy which was one global setting. The crossovers were dead on for each of the 3 different speakers. Levels and EQ settings were perfect. My room is 18 x 22 and my wife even commented how on the other side of the room not in the sweet spot for listening, the sound was much better than before. I am running all 6 ohm speakers and this thing seems to have plenty of power for my room size.

The 1910 has the Anchor Bay scaling chip this year instead of the Faroujda chip last years 1909 had and from what I have seen so far, it handles component to HDMI signals with no problems.

I always thought Denon was overpriced and over hyped after trying the 988. With the added Audyssey features and half the price, this 1910 is the deal of the century imo. The only drawbacks are:

1. Poor remote. I have a Harmony One so it' not much of an issue for me.
2. Confusing at times. I have quite a bit of experience setting up home theater equipment so I made it through OK, but I did have to hit the manual several times which is poorly written. A trip to the AVS forums has a section specifically for Denon setup and can really help newbies.
3. No GUI. This receiver has the blocky white on black on screen display. It really was not much of an issue for me. Others may care.
4. No pre-outs. I have no need for an external amp. Others might.

Bottom line is I cannot believe the performance at this price point. I thought my Yamaha sounded natural, clean, and extremely lifelike. This Denon has me floored in comparison. Makes everything else seem dull and lifeless. I think I am officially a Denon convert.

I've been looking at this receiver for my future HT upgrades. Thanks for the review. I think I want pre-outs but we'll see.

I really like the new Denons and they're at a good price point. Great amp section, Audyssey, reliable, Anchor Bay, etc... If they would get their GUI under control, make their receivers a little prettier, and add pre-outs, they'd be unstoppable.

Got to play some more today. Was having trouble getting the 1910 to sound good at higher volumes. Audyssey just didn't sound right and power seemed anemic. Was watching ZZ Top storytellers from Palladia. Lower levels sound amazing. Turned off Audyssey and let it rip. Oh...My...Gosh....My jamos have never sounded so good. Neither my HK or my Yamaha made em sound like this. I used to play in a band so I am fairly familiar with live sound. Vocals were clear. Every note from Billy's guitar sounded like his amp was in my room. Bass lines were distinct and the drumstick rim shots on Lagrange sounded like someone was clapping wood blocks together. I actually pushed it until my ears could handle no more in my 18 x 22 room and it never distorted. I am completely amazed at this price range. Best $489 I ever spent!!

I would consider replacing my RX-V663 in my bedroom with this receiver if it had pre-outs. I don't know why Denon doesn't add them to more of their receivers. I was impressed with my friends AVR-1909, and I'm sure the 1910 is every bit as good, if not better.

This was my exact experience when I made the Yammy to Denon switch too...

HTR5790 to AVR3806.

Just switched from a Yamaha to the Denon 1910 and feel like it's a bit anemic as the volume goes up. Everyone raves about the Audyssey which I agree with to an extent, but feel like things are more true and expressive with it off as you have said.

Curious if you have turned off Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume as well or leave these on for your own desired results?

Would I be better off using Audyssey for setup and then manually tweaking all the way down and leave all the dynamic/audyssey settings off?

I forgot about this thread... well I do now own a AVR-1910 in another room that is primarily used for 2 ch. music on a pair of Definitive Technology BP10s and an modified Dayton sub-120 sub. In stereo mode this thing has plenty of power to drive the BP10s to a very loud level while still sounding great. Since the tv it's connected to is an old 27" tube tv, I can't use HDMI, but from what I have seen so far with this receiver I like it. I still wish they would include preamp outputs on the lower models, but for what I paid for it I can't complian too much.

Hi,

I would like to know how to tune this amp/receiver to play the best audio possible. I tried listening in PLII Music mode as well as Neo 6 music mode but it doesnt pack the punch that I was expecting. I'm playing a mixture of audio cds as well as mp3(128kbps rate) tracks. My setup is the Klipsch HD300 package speakers with a Velodyne Impact 10 sub.

Blu ray soundtrack sounds way beyond one can imagine using manual setup. But its listening to pure audio that I'm not 100% satisfied.

Any comments please?

Thanks.

Hdmi problems?

I am having difficulty with the sound on my Dennon receiver. The model number is AVR-1910. The serial number is 9103326475.
*
The problem seems to be with the HDMI connection. The connection carries the video signal fine but will not carry the audio signal.
*
I have run a couple of tests to isolate the problem. Firstly I have changed the HDMI cables several times to ensure that they were not the problem. Secondly I have put the HDMI cables into each of the four separate HDMI inputs to ensure that one of them is not the problem. Thirdly I have eliminated the HDMI output by simply using headphones while watching TV. Obviously I could see the picture but I cannot get any sound.
*
I can however get sound if I hook the cable box up to the simple RCA audio connections.
*
Consequently that shows me that the problem seems to be with the HDMI input. I wonder if there is something that needs to be reset on the system in order for that to work or if it is some kind of mechanical/electrical/circuitry problem.
*
The system was working fine until about 3 months ago and then stopped working. There was nothing untoward that I could see that would have caused it to stop working.
*
Any advice that you could give me as to how I can correct this problem would be greatly appreciated.
