Best Computer Monitor For Me?

My computer supports a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200.

The monitor will be placed on a desk and I will be sitting directly in front of it with room to push it back about 2ft.

I am mostly concerned with performance. Size is also important, but accuracy and quality take precedence over it. I do not care for connecting the monitor to any sources besides my computer. I do not plan on having the monitor wall mounted or in any other location. Only one person will be viewing the monitor at any single time, so I don't believe viewing angles would really matter.

Do you have any recommendations on what I should purchase? Value matters. I'd like a good deal.

I have this monitor and I wouldn't swap it out with any other monitor that I know of. My School (design department) has 24" Dell's, 22" Mac's, and 30" macs and I feel that it beats all of them. While I do really like the 30" mac just for the size, the response time is atrocious, screen tearing constantly... My roommate has the same monitor, and I don't know if he is terrible at calibrating monitors, but his colors are a bit off and his contrast is totally off. Also, the back-light on his bleeds FAR more than it does on mine. Mine has almost no black-light bleed, I just double checked right now and I can't even tell. I've seen woot selling this monitor for 200, which is a steal. Really, the only think thing I can fault this monitor for is that it leans a little to the right sometimes, it's barely noticeable (maybe 2 or 3 degrees), but it is easily fixed by just tapping it up a bit. Anything else I could say bad about this monitor if just extreme nit-picking.

What type of performance are you looking for? How large do you want to go? What video card do you have? How much do you want to spend?

If the highest resolution your video card supports is only 1920x1200, I gotta ask what video card you're running.

But to the matter at hand, a 24" wide would be good for you at 2FTN (feet from the nose). Depending on what you mean by performance (design or gaming), you should consider which panel technology you want to use. All of them offer tradeoffs in contrast, pixel refresh, and color accuracy.

For comparison, I use an HP LP3065 @ 2560x1600 ~2.5FTN, and while it's pretty huge, it's wonderfully useful for CAD and image editing.

I'm not really sure what type of performance I'm looking for. I had something that faithfully displays images, movies, and games in mind. If I had to rank things, it'd probably be like this:

Everyday Computer Use > Movies > Games

I'm not sure how large I want to go. I guess I don't have any real need for a huge screen. Just something that would look good at my viewing position.

You really need to narrow down your size though. I'm biased, I'm gonna suggest a 30". You should get out some cardboard, cut out a board to simulate the different sizes, and see which one is comfortable. The resolution will make a difference of course, but standard fair right now is 1920x1200 or 1680x1050. Unless you go large screen.

Check out a local computer store so you can decide best on a size if you don't want to make mockups. Find a size and specify a budget, we can steer you to the best monitor for your bucks.

I apologize for thread jacking but maybe my question will help you out. I also agree 24" is the max for a desktop monitor where you will sit directly in front of it.

I don't have experience with that monitor, but I wanted to make sure that you realize that the accessories are not included with the open box monitor. That might mean all of the cables, but I don't know.

Just as with specs for audio equipment all the different choices can be overwhelming and ultimately you won't know until you buy one and live with it for a long time. Tom's Hardware does pretty good reviews of monitors and can tell you the relative color accuracy, accurate refresh rates, etc.

All I have to offer is I've always used Viewsonic and they usually score very well on reviews too. I buy from the 'professional' series which presumably would be better than the lower models but who knows? They work great for me.

Widescreen may be nice but keep in mind that it could be annoying to have to move your head side to side (like watching a tennis match) to take in the whole screen. I currently have a 20.1" LCD and I don't think I'd want any bigger than 24".

I have a 20.1 inch Samsung Sycnmaster 204b as my primary display, and a 20" widescreen dell analog flat panel as my secondary display, and both are very nice. But I wouldn't mind having a nice new 24" 16:9 widescreen monitor for my pirmary display, but to get a nice one would cost a lot, and I don't really need it anyway. But do your research and get something nice. Also don't forget to check ebay after you find a monitor you like, it just may save you some good money.
