Help: Which of my 2 receivers for my HT?

Today is a big day: the TV I ordered weeks ago is finally arriving and all of the speakers have been installed. Now it's time to put it all together; however, I can't decide which receiver to us.

I have a Marantz SR 5001 that my brother gave me when he upgraded his system. I was planning on using it for the HT; however, it only has 2 HDMI ins and they are version 1.1 and it doesn't have any auto setup options, lastly, it is set up for 7.1 not 7.2 as my room is (although I have an adapter to split the sub signal so that's not a huge deal).

I also have a Yamaha RX-663 that has HDMI ver 1.3, auto setup via a mic, 7.2 setup, etc.

I will be hooking up the following components in the HT: HTPC with Blu-Ray/HD DVD player, HD Cable box, Wii, and LG 50" plasma with built-in Netflix streaming (so I will be running an optical cable from TV out to Receiver In for sound associated with Netflix movies.

Which option would you choose:

1) Marantz with components connected to HDMI 1.1 on receiver and then to TV

2) Marantz with video connected directly to TV (HDMI 1.3 on TV) and sound directly to receiver (I guess through optical)

3) Yamaha with components connected to receiver HDMI 1.3 and then to TV

4) Yamaha with video connected to TV and sound directly to receiver.

I have been reading threads trying to get caught up on benefits of HDMI 1.3 vs 1.1 vs. optical etc but would love to hear from some others.

Well which display did you get? The panny? Its known that yama clips BTB, which may not make a difference to you at all. As for the connections, what are your sources?

I see the LG in the post sorry missed that

So the 663 does clip BtB, about the 665?

* Hopefully his new TV will have a good video processor.

I think they corrected it in the 665 so it no longer clips BTB/WTW. But the 665 has a skimpy amp section and lousy features compared to the competition. Shame that Yamaha is falling behind.

Not sure about the 665.

SP Which speakers did you get?
This for my HT room which has a Klipsch reference system (RF-35s, RC-64, RS-35s, and for subs RSW-10d and Jamo d7).

I was struggling to find speakers for our new family room; however, once my wife saw a soundbar, it was over...that was they way we went for the family room. We got the polk soundbar and added the polk psw-111 and, to be honest, it really is not that bad.

Currently, I have the Yamaha powering the polk surroundbar which seems like a waste in that the faux 5.1 system doesn't require all the connectivity the yamaha has to offer.

I ended up getting a great deal on the new LG and figured I'd give the netflix streaming a shot.

You thinking seems right, go with the yama and try both connections:) You probably will not notice any clipping of the btb wtw, so start there.

At this point, or the Marantz SR5001 or the Yamaha RX-V663 would both do.
Or the digital HDMI connection or the digital Coaxial or Optical Audio connection would both serve their purpose for your situation.
You can use the HDMI connection directly to your TV, and use one of the two digital audio connection (Coaxial or Optical) to your Receiver.

Cheers,

Bob
