All right guys/gals...I will first tell you what I have:

Receiver - Denon 2808
Center - Def Tech CLR2002
Mains - Def Tech BP7004 (Large Tower Loudspeakers)
Rears - Def Tech BPVX
Subwoofer - SVS PB13 Ultra

I was wondering, how should I program my receiver? Now that I have a powerful subwoofer, should I have the receiver recognize the Main speakers as small or large? They are currently set on large.

I never knew how technical some of this stuff really was until I joined this forum. I have learned more in the past week, than the 2 years I've had my HT. I would really appreciate the help. Also, if you could explain why I would want to change the setting so I understand the logic behind it, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Peter

I would keep all speakers set to small, as your sub plays flat and will take care of the low/mid bass very well. A good crossover point would be 80hz and let the sub handle everything below that:)

so...all speakers on small...and set the crossover point on all speakers at 80hz?

I will also be adding a 2nd SVS 13 Ultra in about a month or two...

Does your avr allow independent crossover for all speakers?

Yes
Then you can try 65-70-75 for the mains, but id just set them all at 80 without getting to complicated

Edit: The complication comes from DTs published 3db point, without taking measurments its hard to say which is best

I suggest spending another 50 bucks for a Radio Shack DB meter that has a selectable frequency range. It helps to get some objective measurements so you can make informed adjustments on things like crossovers and relative levels, especially between the sub and the rest of the speakers. After you spend an afternoon messing around with settings, your ears start to get worn out but the meter doesn't fatigue. The hardest thing is to correctly mesh your mains and sub. I have usually ran across a serious lump at the point where the mains and the sub overlap since both are producing well at that point. If that's the case, your best choice might be a "brick wall" crossover rather than a gradual slope. The meter will help you to find out whether this is happening and give you some guidance in the trial and error procedure of getting the settings right.

Two great links to help you in your setup.

Your Denon AVR-2808ci has Audyssey MultEQ XT, which is great for Automatic Room EQ. And like bandphan already mentioned to you, after Audyssey has already performed it's bag of tricks, just manually select all your crossovers at 80hz (if some of them were not already set to that crossover).
And because your two front Def. Tech. speakers are quite large with their own subwoofer section, some various settings are possible.
And also because, you own the best subwoofer, use it for all the bass of your speakers below 80hz (perhaps 60hz for your two front mains) in addition of the LFE channel, of course.

To help you with the final touches on your setup, check this Audyssey Setup Guide:

* And this one about Audyssey FAQ: http://www.audyssey.com/faq/index.html

Cheers,

Bob

Nope. You'll be using the AS-EQ1 SubEQ as the main EQ for your sub.
Audyssey will EQ all your other speakers.

Just check the two links that I already gave you.
And also check the AS-EQ1 SubEQ own web site for that very subject, or down here:

no sound from surround back speakers when playing stereo sound?

Hello, I do apologize as this may be off topic for this thread although the issue can be of interested also for owners of a Z7 unit who use the 7.1 setup.
I have a Z9 unit and I am struggling to get sound from the surround back speakers when I use a DSP mode (let's say church) to listen to stereo music.
In such mode I get sound out of the surround (side) speakers but not from the back surround speakers. I already have set up and stored correctly all the speakers and using the EX modifier I could get sound from the surround back speakers of a 5.1 source. I thought the dsp modes used the full array of speakers available, am I wrong? do I need to set something?
Thank you for your help

Have you also selected a Surround Decoder like PLIIx Music, pg 53,54?
