Snell ICS SUB 24 - IC-Basis 550

Well I did it again. Drinking and ebay just don't mix. I won this sub last night and I think I got a great deal. Here are the specs:

THX requires a response that follows a precise Linkwitz-Reilly shape from 20Hz to 200 Hz. Furthermore, extremely high output levels at very low distortion levels are required (117dB at 80Hz!). To meet these specifications we use two of our best 12-inch woofers and a new 550 watt amplifier and place them in a heavy and highly braced 29”h x 17.5”w x 22.5”d cabinet. The front-ported cabinet design allows this sub to stand tall, lay on its side, or even fire downward. Voted “Best Bang for the Buck” in Stereophile’s Ultimate A/V high-end subwoofer shoot-out, the ICS Sub24mk3 is perfect to anchor the best, dedicated theaters and screening rooms.

Retail on this in 07 was around 2500 and I won this for just over 500.

So has anyone ever heard one of these? It looks like a monster but I guess we will see.

LOL, drunk bidding...can't say I've never done it before.

I bet that thing weighs a ton, let us know how it works out for you.

Congrats! Another toy for the theater. Dual 15"ers looks good.

Luckily I don't drink and eBay. I guess I have drunk and Amazon'd before, though. :)

No that will be at least 150-200 more. It has to come freight and shipping weight is 140lbs:eek::D.

I'm thinking this will solve the bottoming out issue I've been having with my LFM-1.

The big issue is where am I going to put this monster. I think I will have to build it into the front wall under the screen.

Oh and there is the other small issue of telling the wife. But we'll leave that until after we get back from Scotland.

Good plan. Would it better or worse to tell her on the plane? On one hand, she might be less likely to go off on you when you first tell her and would have time to calm down about it. On the other hand, if she was really mad - you'd have no where to run. :D

If she finds out before we go it could be ugly. She has finally bought into the screen (she can watch "So you think you can dance" with the kid) and it is probably not the time to bring this up. She hears me b****ing about the sub but in her opinion it will have to break before I can buy a new one.

There's bass in "So You Think You Can Dance," right? ;) Talk up how the whole experience will be better for the two of them.

What was I thinking? Ship it to me first, and I'll hold on to it until you get back from your trip. Heck, I'll be a great friend and just keep it. That way, you'll never get into trouble. Just hide the check book...

Looks likes a great snag!

I seem to never find any great deals, or when I think I do, it ends up ballooning out of control in the final minutes and I say screw it.

I’m not really sure how you’re going to hide it though?

Why don’t you pull the fuse out of your current sub, and just play like it is broken? ;)Thus you needed to buy a replacement, and as luck would have it you found an awesome deal just in the nick of time:D

He's closer to me, so I think it would be in his best intrest to let me hide it for him:D

I'm sure it will be something like that. The ony problem with that plan is I would like to sell my LFM-1 to get some money back. I may even have a good friend who wants it. The problem is his girlfriend and my wife are very good friends and I'm sure its bound to get out.

It was really funny last night when I was telling the guys about the sub at a party we had and one of the girls came up and was like what are you guys talking about and everyone shut up. They must have thought we were talking about them when it was just about the sub.

Thanks Ryan and Adam for the offers of holding it but it will be stored in my office where all my other illegal purchases hide until I'm brave enough to bring them home.

Reasoning with a woman ... not something I have a lot of faith in. :(

Lying to a woman ... that might work. :D

She already knows and is watching you squirm while she figures out what color car she wants.

Cool I found this article at Ultimage AVMag. This is an older version of what I'm getting but it sounds promising.:D

Link

My room is under 2500 cubic feet so if this can push 110db continuously in a 3000 cubic foot room its going to be fun.

I knew what you meant. I knew you'd catch it later. There really is not much out there on these. I had read Tom's recent review of some Snell speakers so I did a search on ebay and this thing came up. I was considering one of the danley sub's like RMK"s and use it as a riser but I would have to wait a while to save that kind of cash.

Congratulations adk. I'm becoming quite a fan of Snell after I heard a pair of their tower speakers earlier this year. To be honest, I think I'm a little jealous of your new little toy, that's not new, not little and hardly a toy.:D

Thanks Dave. I can't wait to play with this thing but it will be a while. We are leaving for Scotland this Sunday so even if it comes before then I won't have come up with a scheme to get it home that soon.

I want to build a cabinet into the wall like my equipment rack between my left front speaker and the center.

Does anyone think it will be an issue having the sub that far behind (18") the front speakers? I plan on making the cabinet as close to the size of the sub as possible and creating a grill from fabric that matches my walls.
