Building the Bedroom up - question on reciever

Because of my carpet critters crawling around and because our master bedroom seems to now be the focal point of our house - my wife gave me the green light to upgrade the bedroom with something that would be out of harms way. From recommendations on this site and after going to my local audio shop, I bought a used pair of Vienna acoustic waltz for L/R and the Maestro for C from Audiogon. In time I will upgrade to the Bach for L/R and us the waltz as rears. My question now is which reciever to use that I currently have at the house. I'd buy something new, but the funds aren't yet available. I have a Sony DA555ES and a yamaha HTR 5460 that I could use. Both have a 4 ohm switch (waltz are 4 and maestro 6 ohm). I run 80% HT in the room and have a 1080i dlp and a DVD with DVI cables (HD DVD?). Are either one of these got what it takes to push those viennas? What about being able to process the video through the receiver? When I do have the extra cash ($1000-$1200) which receiver would you recommend? Or do I need to get an amp?:confused:

Next ==> Marantz A/V Receiver.

Hi Zool,

Yes, your two actual receivers will drive your Vienna speakers "for now".
And either you use the Sony or the Yamaha, do leave the impedance switch at it's 8-ohm position, even if your Vienna Acoustics Waltz speakers are rated at 4 ohms.

I would prefer that you use the Yamaha receiver for now, instead of the Sony one, for your bedroom.

Now, you'll eventually need to upgrade, when the funds are available.

I highly suggest a Marantz receiver to match with your Vienna Acoustics full speaker system. And you don't need to spend $1,000 either.
Here's a couple or more that I highly recommend to you.

1. Marantz SR6003 ($699.99) > http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR6003/Marantz/SR6003-Dolby-TrueHD-/-dts-HD-Master-Audio-AV-Receiver/1.html
-> Scroll down a bit.
-->> Oups, Sold Out. Anyway, it is available at 6th Avenue Electronics for about $625, from the Price Alert promotion (name your price).

2. Marantz SR8001 ($699.99) > http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR8001/Marantz/SR8001-receiver-125w-x-7ch-HDMI-home-theater-surround/1.html
-> Scroll down a bit.

3. Marantz SR7001 ($499.99) > http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR7001/Marantz/SR7001-receiver-110w-x-7ch-HDMI-home-theater-surround/1.html
-> Scroll down a bit.

4. Marantz SR6001 ($349.99) > http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR6001/Marantz/SR6001-receiver-100w-x-7ch-HDMI-home-theater-surround/1.html

5. Marantz SR5002 ($349.99) > http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/MARSR5002/Marantz/SR5002-receiver-90w-x-7ch-HDMI-home-theater-surround/1.html
-> Scroll down a bit.

*** The #1, #2 and #3 being the most powerful ones.
These Marantz receivers are very sweet sounding with plenty of plenty of power to drive your Vienna speakers, and are of excellent value. No need to look any further for your particular room and speakers. :)
They will perfectly match your nice suite of Vienna speakers. :)

Cheers,

Bob

Lord - R, you really stand by the Marantz name!:D

Thanks for the info. I really need to research exactly what ohms are as your statement about leaving the switch on 8 ohms seems counterintuitive.

Simple explanation that makes common sense.

No, I'm an Onkyo guy. :D Actually, I'm into Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, Marantz, Pioneer Elite, Rotel, Lexicon and Anthem.

But I know a good value when I see one. :)

And these Marantz receivers are it.

*** Receivers that have a two-way swich for speaker impedance, like my Yamaha receiver and yours too, as well your Sony one, are for safety measure to please UL standards about receivers getting too hot with lower speaker's impedance.
But they do that by restricting the power flow from the receiver to your speakers. And by a large amount too. The danger here, is that your receiver will clip earlier that if set to the higher impedance.

Just read some articles and reviews right here at Audioholics about this very subject.

The only and true counterintuitivity is to please the UL standards for power amplifiers, that's it, no more no less.
And a good amp or receiver does not have such a silly switch, isn't now? ;)

Of course, you can always set that silly switch from your receiver(s) to it's lower impedance setting, but you'll loose about half power of your receiver potential. ;) Is that sounds like a fair compromise just to please the UL Laboratories for power amp standards? I thought so too. :)

Cheers,

Bob

Leave the switch set to 8 ohms, switching it to 4 ohms just reduces the rail voltage which will decrease output.

That's exactly what I meant. You took the right words out of my mouth, or was it my brains? Anyway, my railings have been quite diminished (about 50%) recently. That's probably where I lost some energy (power) to find the appropriate full capability of my full potential. I'll switch mode, see what happens. I must have been short of breath (voltage).

The older yamaha seems to be driving the Vienna acoustics just fine. I am really pleased with the sound delivery - very clear. They measure up very well, if not better, than my old paradigm studio 80s.

Good morning Zool,

Well, that's great news Zool. It proves once again that the older Yamaha receiver models were and are better than the newer ones. :)

Enjoy your day and the music from your nice Vienna Acoustics Waltz speakers. :)
