I experienced this phenomenon in the F-15A Eagle off the East Coast of VA while "separating" from a "training" dog fight, going "downhill" in full grunt (AB) and looking over my shoulder to check six. The world very suddenly went milky white--I initially thought I had flown into a cloud, until I looked forward and saw a clear blue sky/ocean and a very high airspeed on the HUD!!

I have a .22 rifle, and about the only sound it makes when fired is a “crack” when the bullet breaks the sound barrier. I wonder if there’s a little cloud around the bullet?

Probably under the same atmospheric conditions. As an observer of such a small particle, you may miss it for sure without high speed film.
