I hate to be that guy, but here I am...

so, I am looking at getting a new TV. I currently have a 32" 720p dynex LCD. It's fine when I am close to it, like I am now, which is about 4 feet, but it doesn't really cut it when I am sitting back and watching some or playing a game, especially multiplayer :):cough::RE5::cough::). Not to mention, it's kinda weak compared to the sound system (i.e. the image feels to small to match the sound). so I am really looking at upping the size of my screen.

Right now I'm thinking of 42" screen, 1080p. MY viewing distance will probably be around 10 feet. I know that this is further away then I would see the benefits of 1080p, but I use my TV as a computer screen a TON (it's main use is as a second monitor), so I would still like to have 1080p.

Like I said before, I use my tv a lot as a monitor, but other than that it's video gaming or movie watching (PS3, Wii, PS2, Dreamcast, ect.). Right now my Budget is around $1000, I really don't want to spend more than that, the fact that I am considering this TV is a little bit ridiculous, even, but I would really like to step it up a notch.

I love the look of Samsung and Panasonic is pretty darn nice as well. I use to not even consider plasmas because of the burn-in, but I hear that that is pretty much all gone and I love the black levels on them... But I haven't been in the TV area very long, and I want to ask the experts :D
Do you guys have any suggestions for me that I could consider? I am all ears (or eyes, I guess, lol).

The pannasonic TC-P42G10 or S1 would be within your budget:) Or move up to the 50" x1 within your budget also:D As for burn in you would have to try to do it and even then i doubt it, just keep it out of torch mode for the first 100 hours.

Isn't that one only 720p though?

Yep, the X1 is 720p. $810 at Sears, though. :) I totally understand the 1080p requirement because of the computer monitor usage. That's a big reason that I payed more to get a 1080p TV.

Fwiw I use my 1150(768p) as a computer display with no issues. However I'm never closer than 4'.
If needed you could always run a dual display to say like a 20" monitor when needed.

I would love the extra inches, but I still would prefer the high resolution. Any one have any other suggestions of the 1080p variety?

On another note, I went into best buy yesterday and spent quite a while looking at their wall of TV's and it was a bit overwhelming. Maybe just the fact that there is so much too look at. Also, when I was judging sizes i realized when I got back to my house that I was probably judging it from about twice the distance than what I would have it in my room. Also, the content that they are playing is rather crappy and is artifacted so it was kinda hard to judge the actual quality. I found myself liking the samsung's a lot, but no surprise there since I have always liked them. I liked some of the Panasonic LCDs as well. I really would have been better off going in with a notebook and writing how I feel about them so I can get things more organized. Also, it doesn't help that most of the TV's arn't calibrated and it's kind of hard to judge a TV when there is a brighter one next too it.

Buydig.com seems to have some good deals right now on the newer Panasonic 1080p plasmas (link here). I think that Andrew bought his TV from them and was happy, but he'd have to confirm that.

I paid over $1400 for my TC-P50G10 a couple of weeks ago, and they have it for $1200 with free shipping and a bunch of free cables.

Congrats Adam on your Panny purchase, good choice. Buydig is very good online dealer, highly recommended. Adam, register your TV at plasmaconcierge.com , Panasonic has excellent customer service through their concierge program. I have the PZ77 series and love it, about two months ago my TV would not power up, I called the # on the concierge card they send you and they asked me exactly what the TV was doing when I tried to power up, I said power light blinked 7 times and shutdown. Four days later 35 year Panasonic service tech was at my door with the part, twenty minutes later I was watching my TV with firmware update to compliment the new part. I almost forgot to add, no charge and my TV was five months out of warranty. I hope thas was helpful to you and the OP. Jeff

FWIW all the new 1080p panny plasmas tested full 1080 lines of motion resolution. So buying a 1080p display that doesnt provide full resolution in motion is fruitless. ;)

I use my macbook on a 720p panny plasma 50" and seems to work perfect. I may be missing something with the 1080p requirement for computer use?

Ok, well then how about this question?
Lets say I go for a Panasonic Plasma, is it worth it for me to try and wait and pay more for a 50"? I'm not exactly rolling in the money as I don't have an actual job, but I am doing computer repairs this summer, which has been pretty good, but I don't want to break the bank and anything over $900 makes me feel a little iffy (because what is left over has to last me for most of the school year at college).

Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you explain to the lines of motion resolution thing. The way I though it worked was the since it's 1080p, as in progressive, there would be 1080 line of motion resolution... So right now I guess I am kinda of confused, so if you wouldn't mind explaining that, that would be awesome

Not to jack this thread but how long do you think one of these would last outside under a covered patio? I might be willing to count it as "disposable" for 1k if I could get a couple of years out of it.

Condensation will be the big issue:) I would think it would last a couple of years, but im not gonna bet on it.
