Oh, my parents irk me at times....

I love my parents. I do. But sometimes they irk the hell out of me. Today, I received from them a forwarded email, which was apparently based on this site and which attempted to expose Obama's "lie", found in the completely unsourced and undated quote: "I only saw Rod Blagojevich one time ... and that was in the stands and from a distance at a Chicago Bears Football Game." The email used pictures from the site and added lots of text explaining what an idiot he was to think he'd never be caught in such a bold lie. Of course, as mentioned, there was no valid source for the quote, and no date for it, and the mysterious "..." in the middle. So, it might never have been said, it might have been said ten years ago or so, or the "..." might have been "last week" or "since I was elected" or "when he was wearing a dress" or something similar.

It doesn't bother me that many people don't like Obama's politics. That's what America's all about. I happen to like him, but I respect those who have differing opinions - at least if they can summon up a few brain cells to defend those opinions. Likewise, I think people who support him should have some actual reason to, as opposed to just following along (sheeps is sheeps, no matter which side you're on).

What bothers me is that my parents (mainly my dad) almost undoubtedly experienced a great deal of glee over how Obama had been "caught in a lie", when the source is so obviously biased and weakly supported that it's obviously either a complete lie or a deliberate misrepresentation. What bothers me more is that the sites that linked to that quote are often racist and unfailingly write in a way which would be understood and agreed to by drunken rednecks. I've got my redneck cred. I grew up in the midwest. I lived in an almost all-white town. I got drunk in cornfields. I rode in the back of pickups. But I was raised to not be a racist and to use my head, and so it irks me to see my parents - again, mainly my dad - so readily fall for this horseshit and probably read those sites. They listen to radio programs that stress that Obama's not a white Christian. They (again, mainly my dad) seem to think that it's OK to mock Muslims and people from the Middle East because, hey, that's not racist, right? And they (again, mainly my dad) seem incapable of rational thought when it comes to looking at things they see in email or on the internet or that they hear on the radio.

I think that rational, thinking adults can be Democrats, Republicans, Independents, religious, atheistic, PC users, Mac users, *nix users, bikers, truckers, ballet dancers, gun enthusiasts, pro-life, pro-choice, straight, gay, knitting fiends, pot smokers, teetotalers, intellectuals, soldiers, poets, wrestlers, and even Audioholics forum members. Difference of opinion is what makes this country great.

But, oh, how it irks me when my parents blindly buy into something without giving it a second thought - and then forward it to me. And it's not because it's anti-Obama. They could have forwarded an email that proved how his excrement tasted like pudding and how his touch could cure cancer. It's more, in this case, the racist undertones on the sites that shared that quote (I went looking for a source) and the fact that they just blindly accept anything certain people forward to them.

Sorry. I just had to vent. I gotta run to catch the completely true and unbiased news from Air America, then I'm off to an anti-war rally, a love-in at Harvard Square, and finally an Al Gore speech.

No, he's not a white Christian. He's a half-white Black Liberation Theologian (and if you can't appreciate the irony in that, I can't help you).:p

My dad's kind of the same way, although less so. I get so many emailed forwarded fro, him, and some of them are such bullshit. I totally agree with you, is I guess what I am saying.

I feel for you man!

My parents are slowly becoming what you’ve described. Sometimes I might actually agree with their points or point of view, but if I get the slightest hint that it the result of some spoon fed idea, or a knee jerk reaction it just puts a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't agree with my brother's portrayal of our parents as racist and stupid, as I don't believe that they are either. He's certainly entitled to his opinion, but I didn't want to have my silence imply that I agree with it.

I think its important to remember that racism isn't a learned behavior. Its also not always a distaste for the human aspect as much as it is a resistance to change.

People tend to believe the lie they've heard first.
This is why the powers that be clamor to indoctrinate the masses at the earliest age possible.

Racial and political bias have been a two way street, driven on since the beginning of time.

I have a real first hand example I can share:
My wife is an accountant, and occasionally we go to night classes / seminars, held at nearby colleges and or high schools.
On every occasion we've seen signs or posters taped to the teacher's desk or podium with political propaganda, with instructions for the student to encourage their parents to vote a certain way.

For the record, I don't think that our parents are either racist or stupid. Over the years, though, they've decided to follow a certain set of drummers to the exclusion of others, and while that's normal enough (everyone tends to become more set in their ways), I feel that they have opted to listen to the more extreme types who tend to be... less than reliable as sources, and who tend to gather fans by pointing out how different other people are and by playing off that fear of differences.

I know my parents are not stupid. Proof of that abounds. I know they're not racist. Fundamentally, my problem is that they've decided on a certain group of people or ideologies to listen to (a religion, a political party, some commentators), and they've decided that they will follow or believe all of what those people or ideologies espouse, instead of picking and choosing what makes sense to them. And often, their choices in who to follow tend to promote an "our way or the highway" approach in which the "our way" part is one in which many people are genetically or culturally unable to participate.

In the end, though, I made the original post because, after days of little sleep and various other things that had pushed me to the edge, the email from them was the last straw, especially because it was one of a number of such emails they'd sent recently. I went back to edit my post later, after calming down, and found out that there's a deadline for editing (which I'm sure you all knew, but I didn't). I was hoping it'd just die down, and I'm sure it will.

Hey, man. I never thought that you considered them racist or stupid, but the original post portrayed them that way (IMO). I didn't want people to get the wrong idea, but I also didn't want to speak for you.

I think that you can edit a post for up to an hour. I'm not certain, but I think that's the case.

On a different note, a large lizard just popped up at the front window while I was typing this. I thought it was cool...

Was it one trying to pass as human? ;) And by "popped up", did you mean it appeared all the sudden, that it suddenly became aroused, that it emerged from the ground, that it jumped, or that it was ejected from the toaster you left there?

mrjsw, I think your parents are pretty cool. Think about it, stay with me here...

They're strong in their convictions and beliefs. For whatever reasons, they don't think Obama is good for this country and they're sticking to it. Screw PCness, that's how they roll.

I admire truth and honesty. Better than some people who are afraid to knock the black president, or worse yet the blatant bigots who have no reason to knock someone other than their skin color or religion or gender preference etc.

Or maybe I'm totally off, I dunno. :)
