hey everyone, this is my first time dealing with home theatre audio and i had a few questions regarding the Yamaha 6140 receiver i purchased a few days ago. I am hoping some helpful members can explain some things better to me :D

I will be powering two Athena AS-F1s with this receiver (a little FYI).

I am planning to plug my two sources (hd cable box & laptop) directly into the RCA jacks behind my receiver. A friend of mine suggested running my audio through the tv and using a digital toslink cable directly to the receiver. Will doing this make a big difference in sound quality?

What are the "scenes" features on my receiver? how can i utilize/customize them for better sound?

What is the difference between the Direct and Straight settings?

The manual goes over them a little but im still not sure what exactly they do. thanks in advanced for the help!

Hi,

First, connect your HD Cable Box HDMI cable out (if it has one) to the HDMI Input of your Yamaha 6140 receiver (HDMI In called "DTV/CBL).
Also connect the digital optical (toslink) Out from your HD Cable Box to the OPT IN of your Yamaha 6140 receiver (OPT IN called "DTV/CBL").
* That source will be dedicated to the "DTV/CBL" Input.

Two, connect the digital optical (toslink) Out of your Laptop (if it has one) to the OPT IN of your Yamaha 6140 receiver (OPT IN called "CD").
Also connect the Audio RCA Stereo jaks Out from your Laptop to the Audio RCA Stereo jaks In of the Input called "CD" from the back of your 6140 receiver.

Three, connect the HDMI OUT from the back of your receiver to the HDMI IN
of your TV (if it has one).

That's all for the Audio connections.

* If your HD Cable Box doesn't have an HDMI Out jack, just use the Components OUT (Blue, Red & Green RCA jacks). And plug these cables the same as for the HDMI cable.

But, if your HD Cable Box has two sets of Audio Analog Stereo RCA Out jacks, you can plug the second set to your TV.
Or if it has only one set of Audio Analog Stereo RCA Out jacks, you can still connect these directly to your TV set, because you are already cover in your receiver by the digital Optical (toslink) connection. So you'll be able to listen to your TV speakers without using your receiver (but why doing that, when it's much nicer to listen from your home speakers instead of these boring TV speakers).

The best sound will be from the digital Optical (toslink) connection to your receiver (unless your HD Cable Box has that HDMI Output).

The "Scene" feature on your receiver is well explained in your manual.
But briefly, it's like a Macro feature; at the push of only one button, you will activate your receiver, than your HD Cable Box, then your receiver will switch to the DTV/CBL input source. And you can program any DSP you like for each "Scene" (Macro) feature. And if you have a DVD player, it will also start to play automatically.

The difference between Direct and Straight is also well explained in your manual. For best sound use the Pure Direct mode, it will turn the display Off and give you the shortest path to Audio Nirvana. :)
Straight will keep the display On, I believe.
Direct will allow you to use the bass management (subwoofer active and operational, if you have one) and the DSP modes.
Your manual should provide you with better explanations.
If you're not sure, just try different modes between these, and see if you can notice a difference. If not, just don't bother. If you think that one sounds better, just leave it there. ;)

Now for a Bonus recommendation, because you seem to be a nice guy.
RYM = Read your manual, taking your time trying to understand and at the same time experimenting with the various features by selecting some modes, trying to push some buttons that you think is the right one and most importantly to sit down and listen while enjoying the music on your new receiver. :)

Hope this helps and Cheers,

Bob

Rectification about "Straight" & "Direct Stereo"

Hi,

^^^ A small adjustment from my post just above. ^^^

"Straight" is to turn the DSP Effect "Off".

"Direct Stereo" is for the best Sound Quality when listening to two channel Stereo mode (CDs, music in 2-channel mode from various sources). "Direct Stereo for high quality 2-channel sound reproduction".

* I did not realise that the Yamaha HTR-6140 don't have a "Pure Direct" mode. The reason why my adjustment. :)

You're welcome buddy. Thanks for your appreciation.

Note: After reading here at Audioholics, Yamaha and other manufacturers as well, just informed me if I was interested to work in their instruction manuals department! ;)

different issue

I also have the 6140 and i cant get the sound programs to output from the rear speakers. They work very well in the 5ch stereo and 5ch enhancer but nothing in any other program, is sound just not meant to come out of those or am i missing something?

Anyone have some input?

Hi bavarian, welcome to Audioholics.

Please give us more details about your sources (blu-ray player, PS3, etc.), and your TV, and how many speakers in your setup (5.1 or 7.1), and the type of connections you are using (HDMI, optical...).

Thank you,

Bob

It sounds to me like your Yamaha 6140 does not do decoding in all surround 5.1-channel from just two RCA analog stereo connection? But that just does not make any sense, right?
Your Yammy 6140 is the equivalent of the RX-V463.

So, let's recap here for a sec.

1. Yam 6140 (or 463) with 2 HDMI v1.3 inputs and 1 out (5.1-channel receiver).
2. PS3 with HDMI v1.3 output.
3. TV display = Unknown with the HDMI input(s) not working for some reason. :(
4. Cable Box is a Verizon mostly using Composite video connection. :(
5. Computer is also mostly using Composite video connection. :(
6. Speaker Setup is a 5.1-channel system (with sub, I presume).

Ok, that's what you have so far. Not too impressive to be quite frank.

What we need here, is a face lift, a rejuvination, a dose of adrenaline, a fix. :)
You probably agree with my diagnostic.
Do you see any problem with your setup?

Your original post was about not receiving any signal from your two surround speakers (only works in 5-channel stereo audio mode and also on 5-channel enhancer audio mode).
So, your goal is to get sound from your two surround speakers (the only one missing right now) in other multichannel audio modes, like several DSP audio modes. But if I'm not mistaking, the DSP audio modes in your Yammy, are based on digital processing, right?
So, it might be hard to do that processing without a digital connection (digital HDMI, digital Coaxial or digital Optical). Still following me?
And as for regular Dolby Digital and DTS, might is well forget about those also.

So, where do you think the problem stem from?

Cheers,

Bob

Yes, a digital connection is giving you much greater audio benefits.

so what ur saying is i need some kind of digital audio cables?
Yep, that's exactly what I'm saying bavarian. That's why you can get your surround speakers working right now with only the 5-channel stereo audio mode and the 5-channel enhanced audio mode, because they worked from 2-channel stereo analog mode.

If I was you, I'll try to make use of the HDMI connection, or at least a digital Optical or Coaxial connection, so you'll get way more audio choices for a full 5.1-channel surround experience. Is that makes sense to you?

Cheers,

Bob
