I am looking at buying a Yamaha receiver which can drive my nominal 4 ohms MK K-7 and LCR 850 speaker. I use a JBL E250P sub for heavy bass lifting and all speakers set to small at 80hz.

My room size is app 14 feet long and 12 feet wide and 10 feet high. I listen at soft to moderate volume and do the occasional crank up as i live in a apartment.

My existing onkyo is fine at low volume but starts to break up in sound quality once i start turning it up.

Please suggest a Yamaha model for my needs.

For moderate volume levels in a small room, I would start looking at nothing lower than a HTR6160 or its RX-V663 counterpart to get teh new HD codecs such as Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Out of curiosity, which Onkyo model do you have? Usually, they have one of the more robust amps out their in the mass market type. Depending on the model of teh Onkyo, you may have to step up to an RX-V1900 or its HTR6290 counterpart which will have no problems with those M&Ks

I have a onkyo SR 504 at reasonable volumes it sounds fine but i when i crank it up to 60% + volume the sound starts to break up quite a bit.

I am sure the Yamaha Amp design is as robust as the onkyo. I have been running this SR504 with the MK for over 3 years now with no problems(Touchwood):). I did not like the DSP quality of the onkyo, i feel the decoding is lacking detail and clarity in output when compared to other brands.

Therefore planning a switch. Also my room is 60% reflective, not many curtains or furnishings.

I would tend to think that poor room acoustics would be the real problem not so much teh Onkyo. Try treating the room first before moving on to a new receiver. My speakers did the same thing when I was driving them with my old Technics SA-DX940 receiver so I first treated the room and it made a big difference. I could go louder after the treatments comparesd to prior the treatments.

Yamaha A/V receiver recommendation for your needs.

The Yamaha RX-V1900. Or even last year model, the RX-V1800 (which is the very same receiver that 3db uses in his own system).
And the 1800 :) could be find for a much better price than the 1900.
