If you want external amps for all channels then 5 + 2

When they smoke they are over powered!

This is a difficult question to answer. Music program is constantly all over the map, in terms of power demands. All voice coils have a power time curve that have a point where the voice coil fries.

If you are sensible you are unlikely to fry a driver. Keep spls at sane levels, if for no other reason than to avoid frying our ears. Your ears are more easily fried than most drivers and there are no replacements or reconing.

Much is made of blowing speakers with under powering. An over loaded amp in clipping produces a lot of harmonic distortion, which increases the demands on the tweeter and can fry them and the mid ranges in three ways.

However since the introduction of ferro fluid in tweeter voice coil gaps, tweeters are not as easily destroyed as thirty years ago.

In my experience speakers are fried because they are played insanely loud.

The huge dynamic range compression applied to pop music is certainly an aggravating factor in blowing drivers.

I have noticed that most blown drivers reported on these forums are subs. I suspect that is because of Lucas Labs 20 db boost in the LFE channel for explosions in movies.

Thank you for your kind comments on my system pictures.
