Having spent a week trying various setup options for the DVD-A1UDCI into a Denon AVP-A1HDCI, the following may be helpful to others setting up the player:
1. Out of the box, the player correctly plays Blu-Ray, DVD-V, DVD-A, CD's (including HDCD), and various odd encodings, such 24/96 DVD audio disks (Classic Records) and DST audio disks. It will not play SACD's correctly unless the screen on the AVP-1 shows "Multi Channel In" rather than "Direct" (when LFE channel will be 10db below all other channels).
2. To play SACD's with the AVP-1 receiving and processing the DSD signal, you must use the Denon-Link input. If you want your display to show basic track information (and video on DVD-A's), you must also have an HDMI input active. I set up an input called DGT MUS (digital music) with both an active HDMI input and the Denon Link active (in the digital menu).
3. All you need to play Blu-Ray's and DVD's is a single active HDMI input. Be sure to set the output in the player to "Bitstream" to have the AVP-1 process the audio on the disks. When setup correctly, the AVP-1 will show the name of the bitstream ("Dolby HD" for example). If not correctly setup, it will show "Multi Channel In"
4. The AVP-1 will permit an HDMI input to be used only once. Thus, if you want video for SACD's and DVD-A's and for DVD's, you must use both of the HDMI outputs on the DVD player (two cables to two inputs, one assigned to the SACD/DVD-A input (say, HCMI 2) and one assigned to the DVD input (say, HDMI 3).
5. The player can be setup to output analog multi-channel SACD and DVD-A, but the process is extremely frustrating because the proper menu choices are grayed out. What worked for me is a) unplug all HDMI cables; b) plug in a component cable, and set the AVP-1 to receive a component input; c) disable the Denon Link output; d) in the HDMI Setup menu, Audio Setup, select "2 Channel". Then go to the Audio Setup and make any needed adjustments. Finally, go back to the HDMI Setup Menu, Audio Setup, and choose "Auto". I don't know why this last choice must be made on the HDMI Sepuo menu, but SACD analog output will not work unless you choose "Auto".
