Fixing an old Electrohome stereo cabinet

I just became the second owner of a mint condition Electrohome stereo cabinet with a turntable and AM/FM. The extended warranty expired 35 years ago, so I turn to you for a quick question!

There is a large amount of excess bass from the right channel. It happens regardless of the audio source. How might I go about diagnosing the cause?

I have a multimeter, I'm a quick study, and I begin with zero knowledge of the inner workings of an old cabinet like this. It's significantly older than I am.

You could start by replacing the caps in the first order crossover. At that age they are probably dried up. Before you do so, test each woofer independently for impedance. With them all in parallel my guess is the impedance is fairly high on each woofer

If you want any sort of performance out of it (without spending too much), I would suggest retro fitting a Dayton recession buster kit into the cabinet with enclosures behind the woofers.

Did you mean that they're wired in series?

Is there a good write-up anywhere on how to go about retrofitting modern sound into one of these old 3-way cabinets? Like I said, I have nearly zero knowledge of these things — I replaced a torn woofer in an early '70s loudspeaker once, that's it that's all.

Appreciate the advice, thanks.

Actually, the more I look at this stereo and the more I read up, the more I think I'd be up for fully replacing the speakers with whatever makes the most sense.

I have about 10" width, 16" height and 12" depth to work with on each side. How should I go about deciding what to put in here? My only needs are decent sound and 8 ohms impedance. Building my own crossover might be slightly over my head; building my own cabinet is out of the question, as I don't have the necessary tools (live in a condo).

Thanks again.

Finally, some more pictures; feel free to linkify on my behalf.

(Adam linked them in his post that follows. Thanks Adam!)

I realize it's nothing special, but it's in immaculate condition. My grandmother gave me this piece, and I'd love for her to get the chance to see it restored to its former glory.

Sure thing! The images are large enough that it's not good to just embed them here, but I'll link them. You'll be able to link on your next post (once you get to five posts).

Thanks Adam. Now if you could go find the contractor who walked out of my condo with my multimeter, I'd be doubly appreciative. :)
