Hi there,

I'm new to the message board.

I am also new to the digital world.

Currently I have a 52" Plasma LG HD tv, Shaw HD Cable Box, and Playstation 3 all setup and working fine.

I just got a Samsung Home Theater System HT-TQ85 Digital Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.

Currently I ran the speaker wires to the receiver (Which is also by coincidence a 5 disc DVD player). From there, I have a "optical cable" plugged in from the Shaw HD Cable box to the Receiver.
The receiver has the 3 colored cables (red/green/blue) going from the receiver to the TV in the Component 2 section on the back of the TV.

The surround sound doesn't work.

Can anyone show me a diagram of how to set this all up so that my regular TV (from the Shaw box), Playstation 3, AND receiver that plays DVD's all have surround sound? Or explain to me how to do it exactly.

Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Welcome to the forum!

To get surround sound from a DVD that is played on that Samsung unit, you just need to select the surround sound mode that you want. Because all of the audio is coming from the unit itself, there isn't any additional wiring that needs to be done.

To get sound from either the digital optical input (that you are using) or the HDMI input (which I'm about to suggest), you need to select that input by pressing the "AUX" button that is located near the top center of the remote control until it reads either "DIGITAL IN" (for the optical input) or "HDMI IN".

That Samsung unit only has two digital audio inputs: the optical input and an HDMI input. Does your PS3 or cable box have an HDMI output? If so, you could connect one to the receiver using the HDMI input and connect the other one using the optical input.

In terms of video, whichever unit (cable or PS3) that you connect using the optical input, you'll need to connect the video directly to the TV. The only video input that Samsung has is the HDMI input.

That's just to get this started. Please let us know the questions that you have about all this.

Hey there

I'm still having issues. This is what I've done.

I plugged my PS3 with an HDMI cable from the console to the back of the receiver where it says HDMI IN.

I plugged my Shaw HD cable box with the Optical Cable from the box to the Receiver.

I plugged my Shaw HD Box to the TV using the component cables (Green/Red/Blue).

I plugged my Receiver using the component cables to the TV as well.

I also have an HDMI cable going from the Receiver (HDMI OUT) to the TV too.

Still nothing. Any ideas? My TV picture is on and looks fine, but there is no sound.

I'm at work right now, but I'll be happy to help later tonight if someone else doesn't get you all set up first.

Okay, so after fidling around with it, I got some progress:

I got the Cable TV to work with the surround sound now, as well as the Receiver DVD player to work too.

The problem: My Playstation 3 still doesn't work. I plug the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the back of the receiver in the HDMI IN hole, and still nothing. I put the TV setting to HDMI 1 and the screen goes black with no sound.

Any ideas?

Nevermind, Samsung just informed me the receiver is not PS3 compatible.
