Making PS3 a friendly brower.

I've had the PS3 for a while but rarely use it because it's rather awkward to use as a browser. One of the most annoying things is that every page I load on AH gives me a pop up screen asking if I want to run the plug in. Is there a way to set it so that it automatically runs the plug ins?

For that matter, are there any other tips and tricks that can make the PS3 a more friendly brower. I've already got the Mediaboard, so typing isn't an issue. I'm just not savvy with the internal workings or settings on the PS3 itself. It's about time this thing got used the way it was intended.

You can tell that the PS3 sucks. I typed that post on my PS3 and actually spelled browser wrong in the title of my post. It could also be a result of typing that post from my bed after 4AM using my 42" display as a monitor. It's just easier to blame the PS3 for everything, including my typing errors.

Good call. I didn't even notice that. The Mediaboard makes using the PS3 much easier but would not be suitable as an everyday keyboard on your main PC. There seems to be a lot of sticky keys that cause a lot of spelling mistakes.

Thanks res6. After reading that Wiki page, my only response is "I've heard of Linux". Beyond that, I have no idea what Linux does or how it might benefit the PS3, never mind how to aquire, load, configure or use it.

I am willing to learn but be forewarned that you cannot rely on my knowledge of PC operations and terminology as a basis of mutual understanding. I know how to use a forum and e-mail functions on a PC but I have no idea how they actually work. I would venture to say that the average 5th grader is more computer savvy than I.

With your indulgence, what is the first step to turning my PS3 from a paper weight into a functional computer?

Thanks. The first link looks pretty straight forward as far as installing Linux. But at the end of the article, it gets into programming code, etc. Will any of that be necessary for using the PS3 as a normal web browSer.

The programming stuff really isn't necessary to USE the OS... it's like Windows... it allows you to run web browsers, media players... any program.

Ubuntu is just a version of Linux. Linux is open-source, meaning anyone can take the code and modify it to their liking. That is where you get all of the different variations of Linux (Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu...) Essentially, they are the same. The different versions just have different functions that have been created by different users.

The PS3 or 360 are primarily game consoles. They both do this function exceptionally well. Everything else, music, disc media player, internet (for browser or streaming media), etc. are secondary functions. Bottom line, they are game consoles and not HTPCs. IMO, even still, they do the secondary functions pretty darn good.

It's about time this thing got used the way it was intended.

Gaming, gaming and more gaming. That is the only intent . Everything else is just to keep the casual gamer happy, those who wants the GAME console to serve their media and feed the kids .

As it turns out, my gaming skills are sorely lacking.

The PS3 will also run windows. It actually runs XP MCE fairly well. Its a complicated install but there are some tutorials available. I'd just sit tight for a while, Dave. There's gotta be a better browser available soon.

I have directed my wife to this thread. She is my local computer manager. She researches, buys, configures, monitors and maintains our computers. I literally just open them up and browse the web. I'm trying to get her to do the Linux upgrade to the PS3 for me. I'm afraid of ruining the thing.

I'd bet Alex could do it just fine. I'm also confident in my wife's ability.

It turns out that my wife is an enabler. She'll do it for me and it saves me the trouble of having to actually learn how to do anything with a computer.

I got so far as downloading Yellow Dog Linux. But once I learned that you have to re-format your hard drive to install it, I changed my mind. A tutorial I watched said it takes about 3 hours to format a 60GB HD and I've got a 320 in mine! No way I'm waiting 10 hours for my PS 3 to reformat itself.

Plus you have to boot up Linux every time you want to use it. So it's not like you can just switch back and forth between Linux and the Sony OS on the fly. Kinda seems like more of a pain than it's worth to me. I just use my PC when I want to surf the web. My PS 3 is just used for games and Blu-rays. The PS 3 sucks balls as a browser.
