I would wager that most of us back up our DVDs and CDs either on our computer or on DVD/CD-Rs. I think its just prudent considering if you buy it and scratch it, you have to buy another one. I have had a couple DVD players that won't play my backed up DVD-Rs; these were usually pretty cheap players. My question is with the falling prices of internal and external Blu-ray drives and burners for computers, what is the compatibility with the new players that are coming out? I haven't seen any spec sheet specifically saying they play BD-Rs. Considering I barely want to buy BDs as it is, I really don't want to have to buy the disc again if it gets scratched.

Thanks.

As far as I know, we are little ways away from being able to back up the BR discs. Eventually...

Quit throwing your discs...:D

Discs with extra protective coatings.

Well, Blu-Ray disc recorders have been available in Japan for quite a while now. And they will eventually appear here as well (dedicated home theater system ones); if not this year, probably next year. Blu-Ray discs are very scratch resistant with their additional special coating. That is a very big plus.

For DVD and CD discs, you can buy some professional brands that have more protective coating layers on them.
And a person that is resonably careful with his discs, never scratch them in the first place. ;)
