Welcome to the forum!

It sounds like you might have a ground loop between your sub and your receiver. I think that might explain the hum that you get when you only use a single connection point. I'm just speculating.

I don't think that connecting to the input jack on the TAPE would hurt anything. I hope others will chime in if I'm wrong.

Also, it won't use any more power from your Sherwood.

----------------

I also want to make sure that we're on the same page for the connection, so here's a bit more.

Based on the title of your thread, I'm assuming that you want to use only the sub portion of your Gigaworks G500 system with your Sherwood (and not the other speakers). If that's not the case, let us know, because the answer will be different than the one that I give below.

To connect the "PRE OUT SUBWOOFER" output from the Sherwood to the G500 sub, you would use the cable that you mentioned. You would connect the 3.5mm jack to the "CENTER/SUBWOOFER" input on the G500 (orange colored, I believe). With that input on the G500, one of the RCA plugs would be for the center channel, while the other is for the subwoofer. If that's the connection that you've made already, then you know that the white RCA connector is for the subwoofer. The red would then be for the center channel, which you don't need to use if you're just trying to send a subwoofer signal. If connecting the other gets rid of the hum, though, then do what you've done (unless someone chimes in and believes it will hurt something).

On your first post you mentioned that you connected the red RCA connector to one of the TAPE PLAY inputs, and in your follow-up you mentioned that it was connected to one of the TAPE REC outputs. I wouldn't use the TAPE REC output because it can/will send a full-range signal to the G500 system, and the G500 will take that full-range signal as the center channel signal and might (I'm not certain) split out some frequencies to send to the sub. If it did that, then you'd get bass from a signal that you weren't intending to use. If that's not happening to you, then no worries about using the REC output.

There are ways to troubleshoot and remove a ground loop, if that's what your issue is. Here is an article from Audioholics on the issue, and here is another.

I was wondering that myself before you asked. :) Now that I know that the Digi-Link connectors are RCA, I'd probably use one of those.

The line-level outputs on the back of your receiver aren't going to use any significant amount of power. You'll never notice it.

I can't say if the y-splitter idea would work or not. I just don't know. If you were to take the red connector and touch the outer metal sheath to the outer metal sheath on the white connector (which is plugged into the subwoofer pre-amp output) and the hum stops, then I'd say there's a good chance that the y-splitter would work. If touching those two metal sheaths doesn't stop the hum...well, doesn't mean that the y-splitter wouldn't work.

Thanks for the link. I snagged the owner's manual at the beginning of the thread so that I could check out the back panel.
