Need opinion: Velodyne VX-10, Dayton SUB-100, STF-1, or something else?

Hi all,

I need your invaluable inputs regarding which subs to buy.

I like Velodyne VX-10, I believe it suit my needs, but I can't get rid of Dayton SUB-100 from my mind.

I heard that new Dayton quality is subpar, especially the foam surround and overall quality. But then, VX-10 also has a foam-rubber surround

So, any other idea? I need "think outside the box" idea, since I'm pretty much stuck on VX-10 and SUB-100

I don't really looking for something that can shake the house, I prefer good quality bass over the boomy one.

Anyway, here's my "spec":

- Budget: around $200 (preferably below, but slightly higher is ok).
- Room: 2000 cu.ft.
- Primary uses: Music (Karaoke) + Movie.
- Listening habits: Medium vol., prefer good quality bass rather than boomy bass.

I plan to use it with my 2 speakers: JBL Northridge E Series (E30).
My receiver: Sherwood RD-7500

Get they Dyne unless you want to save money. If you happened to live close I would let you audition my sub.

Ah, I got it! It's the short for Velodyne.

How do you like your Dayton 100? Is the foam surround holding ok?
Any problem with it so far? How long do you have it?

try this 8 inch sub from the speaker company. This company actually sells quality stuff. I have it, great little sub, only got it for $90. I highly recommend it.

i have a CHT-10R (velodyne), not sure what you guys pay but i love it, im not sure how it compares to the VX-10 but if they are similar you cant go wrong. the overexcursion limiter is great, ive tested it!!! ha ha had to see its limits. oh and the foam surround is good for 10 years or more id say provided its not bathed in direct sunlight. maybe im wrong.

I have a VX-10 that I just retired and from my experience it's a good sub. Very tight and musical and will just about fill 2000cu-ft. It should do fine for music. What it lacks is deep lows for movies. It's really the only low cost Velodyne that I've liked and I've owned a couple of their products. I've been playing with a TSC T250 (one on my office and one in my bedroom) and it will flat fill your room with sound but they are a bit directional. You'd want it pointed in your general direction. If you have the money for a Hsu they have a great reputation but run a bit over your budget.

Anyway, I decided to go with Energy ESW-V8 from wwstereo.com.
The seller has a great reputation, and they have such a great deal.

Normal price everywhere else is around $450 - $500, they have it for $249, not to mention that they have free shipping too

Thanks for your input, but I placed my ESW-V8 order already last night.
I read a review somewhere (I forgot), the owner said that the midbass is not that strong on PA-120. And also I saw some review regarding the build quality of HD-SUB12 (I don't know whether he/she abused it or not).

Anyway, even though I never saw bad review on ESW-V8, I will cross my finger and hope everything works fine.

my definition for midbass is is different than most home audio guys.. coming from car audio.. midbass is the range between the lower MIDrange and the upper BASS.... but in home audio the term means middle bass,,, bass between 100-40hz...

my pa120 has no problem playing in that range....

placement has a great deal to do with reproduction of bass quality


im sure u will enjoy ur sub of choice.... have fun with it and give a detaled review aswelll as take pics ...

Ah, I see... I thought of it in home audio term.
Yes I will post pics, the sub will arrive next week. But my review would be "limited" though... as I am merely an audio enthusiast, not an audiophile.

I wish I could compare PA-120 with ESW-V8 in my room to give a better review

Here are some pics of the subs.

I'm extremely happy with the purchase, even though I still couldn't play it to the full capacity (break i period), but by using only 1/3 of the volume, I can hear the solid, smooth, and deep bass from it.

It came in a nice packaging, very nice glossy finish, edges are perfect (round, smooth, and no scratch).

There's one small thing, there's a 1/2 inch scratch near the front, right bottom hole (to plug in the cover). But it's hardly notice-able, and moreover, when I put the cover on, it's invisible.

I'm still testing the Auto On/Off mode.
