Antenna Bar on Receiver

So I got this old rec'r for $20 and the antenna bar is gone ... and the wires are cut.

Taking baby steps to see if it works I turned it on with no speakers selected to play. I hooked up an FM antenna and tuned in a station. 'Tuning' and 'Signal' meters showed good but nothing came out of either headphone output.

Is this happening because of the antenna bar situation or do I have a different problem?

The ferrite bar is for AM, not FM. AM needs a loop, not a dipole (two separate, unconnected leads).

That "antenna bar" on the back of receivers is only an AM antenna. You should get something, noise at least.

To be sure, take an ipod, CD player, or some other source, and feed it through an aux input. If you hear something, that means then tuner is shot but the amp is good.

Are there tape monitor switches? If so, push 'em in and out a few times. Sometimes these can be the cause of many headaches and deoxit can go along way to cure this.

Do you hear anything yet? If not, it may be an amplifier issue. That would then be a judgment call.

I thought it was an AM thing and when you mentioned plugging something into auxiliary it reminded me that for my 'working' (I just don't want people thinking that all my sh!t is broke! ) 2 channel system, my 5 disc changer has this ridiculously long unshielded pair of interconnects (I haven't gotten around to making the custom length RG-6 Quad Shield babies up yet). Well I plugged that in and no dice.

I missed your post completely.

The rec'r has the regular AM Antenna screw type hook ups but that's the least of my issues with this at the moment. I may as well get this figured out while I'm here: The wires to the bar were cut, there's 5 of them. The AM Antenna screw is right beside a Gnd screw. There are two other Gnd screw type connectors away from the Antenna area for turn tables I'm sure but what's up with the AM Antenna and Gnd screws in conjunction with the antenna bar. I can live without AM but figure that knowing what is going on would be good.

Does the AM 'loop' go from AM Antenna to the Gnd in the Antenna area?
And then what is the antenna bar do with 5 wires?

It just came to me. The ferrite bar is used to 'tune' it to a particular station and the antenna just picks up the signal. An AM loop goes from the AM to the GND connectors ... right?

Those two receivers that you bought cheap have been a great investment, considering how much tinkering you've been able to do on them. Good stuff.

BTW, you listen to radio at home? That's almost as bad as some loser watching over-the-air broadcasts on a 27" CRT.

I agree Adam, they've been a great investment... right up to the point he throws them out the upstairs window.
So Alex, if I may add a few pointers: Open the window first, and make sure your truck isn't parked within throwing distance.

Well they don't work yet but I'm learning all kinds of stuff as I snoop around. I have the service manuals for both and AudioKarma has a fair bit of info on vintage gear. They are cleaning up nicely as I tinker away so they are getting prettier by the day.

There is actually three Craigslist receivers. Don't forget the Pioneer SX-650 that's in my sig. 35 watts per channel of Rock & Roll bliss not to mention the Craigslist Pioneer HPM-100 speakers. It all started with the Dayton BR-1's requiring soldering. Now it's on.

I need to clarify that some. I was demolishing a store front in a strip plaza and had the idea that because sometimes the glass would not break when I hit it with a sledge; if I stood back and threw the sledge, the glass would or wouldn't break but the sledge would fall to the floor. Stupid, I know. Hey, nobody was more surprised than me when the sledge went right through the glass and out into the parking lot. I was working for my brother. He looked over at me and said, "what are you, f^%&ing nuts ?!?"

I don't want anybody thinking that I'm running around with a complete disregard for others.
