Sony vs Onkyo Receiver

I recently purchase a Sony STR DG920. However, after all of the Booo's I got about Sony here on the forum...I returned it and ordered an Onkyo.

The Onkyo I purchased is TX-SR606. To me, at least, they sound equal. The main difference I've noticed is the video resolution/clarity.

The reason I chose these 2 receivers was for the (4) HDMI inputs and ease of connectivity.

The Sony upscales everything to 1080p while the Onkyo upscales to 1080i.

With the Sony, my attention was never drawn to the video quality. I guess, b/c it was the same quality that I had been accustomed to going straight out of my Blu Ray to the Projector.

With the Onkyo, I have noticed alot of "blurriness" in the movies. The movies seem softer overall and not as sharp. Now, it still looks good but it definetely detracts from the overall home theater experience. I find myself focused on the image quality and not the movie itself.

So, does the 1080i vs 1080p make a significant difference in general? I wouldn't think so......

Are there settings that I'm unaware of that could be changed? I really don't think so but correct me if I'm wrong.

I guess my next step is to find a scene in the movie that I can really notice the difference and then pop the HDMI out of the receiver and back into the Blu Ray directly and see if there is an improvement.

Any help would be appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken if a video signal is input into the Onkyo at 1080p it will be output at 1080p. It will only upconvert a signal to 1080i if it comes in at a lower resolution. Therefore as long as your Blu Ray player is outputting 1080p you shouldn't be noticing any difference between the two receivers. Unless either the Blu Ray player isn't outputting 1080p (most have a setting) or the Sony was doing something to the video. I'd check your settings on the Blu Ray player.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check the BR settings tomorrow and see what happens. I haven't had a chance to mess with it today.

Just because we boo a product doesn't mean it really sucks(unless it's the B or M company) That's our opinion. If you like what you have who are we to tell you otherwise.

I completely agree but I do value the opinion of others who are more experienced than I am. I had heard the same about Sony from other sources as well so I figured there must be something to it. Also, I heard from many sources that Onkyo and Yamaha make 2 of the better, affordable receivers.

They make better receivers. Rest assured of that. I'm certain your PQ issues are settings related. My PJ looked fine with an Onkyo receiver.

I don't know about the Sony, but I own the Onkyo. I can tell you I didn't buy it for the upconversion, it is terrible. Although if you set it to "pass through" that should clear up your picture.

Good point as most displays do a better job at the native upconversion level. At least, that has been my experience. For example, I ordered the Motorola DVR from my local cable company to obtain better pq from my analog cable tv. I really don't care about recording, but did want to get a HD picture. To my surprise, my 42" LG gave me as good as pq just from the rf connection from the wall!!!!:eek: I could not believe my own eyes. Needless to say, the crappy DVR went back. Currently, I am getting digital cable w/o a need for a box and the pq is even better. Lets just say I am a happy camper now. Way to go Insight!!!!! The best part is I do not have to pay the extra monthly fee for the DVR. Saving money feels great!

will most screens upscale the incoming image to its native resoloution?? reason i ask is , as previously said my picture quality on sd cable connected via component is as good as the hd version when i saw it displayed on a friends screen.

That happened to me too. That is why I sent the Motorola DVR packing. My LG did a much better job. The PQ I am getting now with digital cable is even better. My guess is my LG has a good scaler in it. At least, it works for my needs. :);):) So then, why bother paying the extra money for the DVR? I don't record anything and the PQ is NOT as good. Therefore, it was a "no-brainer" as far as I am concerned. :):) However, we all have different needs/expectations.

Cheers,

Phil
