Please Help Dayton Sub 100

For the past week and a half or so I've been trying to set up my new Dayton 100 subwoofer with a yamaha HTR 6140.

I had it working(I think) for about 3 days. I had the subwoofer up about 50% on the receiver and about 50% on the subwoofer. I had crossover on the receiver set to 80hz and frequency knob set to about 100hz on the subwoofer, and it was working.

Someone told me to turn the frequency knob up to max so I did. I'm not sure if thats what caused my problem. There are a bunch of settings in the setup menu of the receiver that I have no idea what they even mean. I was changing them around to try and get rid of a hissing noise but it just made the sound stop working all together, so I changed everything back to auto.

I watched a blu-ray last night and kinda thought there was a lack of base but thought it might just be the movie. However, this morning I confirmed that I am indeed getting no sound at all out of the sub. The only time I can hear sound out of the sub is when upping/lowering the sub level on the receiver as it sends out a test tone every time you raise/lower it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it on Auto? Put it to on and see if it works then.

If you were satsfied with the sound the way it was then change it back. The worst thing you can do to a great sounding system is change it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Maybe you turned the knob the wrong way? It happens to the best of us. Did you change any cables? Could have the thing plugged up wrong. Check your subwoofer level in your receiver. Max it out and then use the gain to adjust the volume. This will help to ensure your getting a signal from the receiver.

If you have this sub half way up I am betting you have a bad placement. Mine is at 1/4th the possible gain with a -db on the receiver. So it can make noise. You must be sitting in a null. Swap put the sub as close as you can to where you sit. Then crawl around along the walls looking for the best spot sound wise.

If this is happening in music. It's because your main speakers are set to large. Make sure you set all speakers to small when you have a sub. Always use Music to test and tweak sub. Since you will be able to tell if it's working and how it sounds more quickly. You can also get a better idea for levels with music than with movies. Also use music to determine your crossovers. Put it at whatever sounds the best to you ears.

When messing with a receiver grab the manual. If you don't understand something ask. We'll be glad to help. We've all been in your shoes before. Don't be afraid to manually configure stuff. How else will you learn if you never try? Chances are you won't break anything. Unless you are trying too.

If your subwoofer is crossed over in the receiver, then you would want to set the crossover to the max on the sub. I would just leave the crossover set at either 80 or 100 in the receiver, depending on your main speakers.
