Strange Hissing Noise

I recently set up a new infinity beta 20 home theater system powered by a Yamaha HTR-6140.

I first tested the system with some burnt CDs that I had laying around and noticed a pretty consistent background hiss. When the music is loud it's hard to notice but during the quiet passages it is especially noticeable. Being that these CDs were burned from my ipod, i attributed the hiss to poor sound quality on the CD end.

Now that I have had the chance to watch a few movies on the system, I can say that there are times when I still notice the hiss. Sometimes the hiss is very noticeable during quiet points in the movie while other times quiet points are dead silent.

Is this supposed to be happening or could this be a problem? My friend owns a logitech z5500 system that he uses for home theater and I don't seem to remember hearing that hissing noise on his system.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What tone adjustments have you made? Are you using any audio signal processing?

Do you have a digital cable box going to the Yammy if so unplug that and see what happens that was the cause of my hiss I have since fixed the cable problem.

I'm pretty sure now that the background noise I was hearing in the cd's was from poor rip quality as I tried it on another system and can still hear the same thing.

I haven't done any tone adjustments I don't think.

Whenever I do the auto setup thing that the receiver can do it always says my sub is too low and sets it to like 34ft when it's really more like 12ft.

Also, this time it said my center was out of phase and set it to 21ft but this has never happened before.

I have heard hiss when the audio feed came from the TV but that was quite a while ago. I have heard very little hiss from any kind if equipment in a long time. Don't forget about the fact that the recording may have a lot of noise and the rip may have nothing to do with it. When CDs first came out, I had a customer call to complain about the amount of hiss on what he was listening to. I asked what disc it was and he said, "The Who, Live at Leeds".

Well, I turned the frequency knob on the subwoofer up to max and now I don't get any sound out of the sub at all. I tried turning it back to half and still no sound. So now I don't have a subwoofer.

It's really frustrating, I've been trying to get this receiver set up for over a week now and still can't get it working.

Np man, a little humor is always welcome. A movie I really noticed the hissing in was The Green Mile. Could someone with that DVD tell me if maybe it's just the DVD?
