I have an interest in the Epson 6500 even though it will be later this year before I go this route. I know nothing about PJs and would like to know what is doable in my space.

I am thinking a drop down screen and the PJ mounted on a shelf that will be at 9ft height. This height is my only real option as it is were an arch comes down before the room opens into my kitchen. The distance is 18ft and I have 100" between my speakers for the screen. Will something like this work? What size screen can I go with?

The picture below shows were I would have to put a shelf for the PJ, the ceiling is 12ft.

Well I'm only a little farther ahead as I do have my screen but that is it.

With your placement issues I think the projector calculator or projection calculator pro will help you figure out if it will work and what screen size you can use.

I know that my 84" screen that the tension bar at the bottom is also 84" so with 100" you should be able to do at least a 92" screen.

I'm looking at both the 6500UB, 6100 both by epson and also the Mitsu 5500 which I could get for under 2 grand.

I know less than you, but I just wanted to say that I like your updated kitchen even better now that I've seen it along with the area around it.

I also wish that I could come up with a good joke about you starting a thread entitled, "I know nothing"...but I've got nothing.

Ceiling mounting the PJ would probably be preferred. (Shelf mounted PJs can shine in your eyes if your not careful. Plus if someone walks in the light line or stands up it blocks the picture. With the PJ you selected you can lens shift so you can put the PJ higher than I do.

according to this you will need light control to use this PJ.

You could do a seymourav screen and then put your center channel in line with your L and R channels...just an option since you haven't bought the screen yet. I think that'll be a good PJ. I have a Mits HC6500 and haven't had a single problem with it and I highly recommend it. You have lots of options, so have fun shopping!

<edit> What about that fan too? Will it get in the way?

Is there any issue with it being mounted that high? I will do a plama on the wall for daytime/normal viewing so my lighting shouldn't be an issue.

Well, I didn't even think of the center so thanks.

I can just move the fan over if I need to or I can raise it since it is on a four foot extension pole.

No problem. I was very fortunate and had my first non-HTIB theater with an AT screen with 3 identical, in-line speakers, so I can't say how much doing that will really improve imaging. I do know that I never have any problems regarding imaging in my theater, and that's without much acoustical treatments.

I think it just makes sense to do it how I did it, but again, I was fortunate to be able to start with a blank slate and several dozen enthusiasts on AVS, here, and locally helping me/advising along the way.

Based on the lens centered at 102" h x 16.5' from front wall and screen gain > 1.1 you should be able to go up to a 110" diag. At max vertical offset, the bottom of screen could go down to about 24". Hopefully, I've interpreted the offset table correctly.

Dawg, at 16:9 you can fit a 114" display, but that doesn't include masking borders. So, let's say 108". Use this screen size calculator for future reference:
http://tvcalculator.com/index.html?3d5acff8b909268b5160d340241ce993

Otherwise, I'm afraid I can't add much for the moment. I would like to ask you a few questions:

-overall budget?
-how far are you sitting from screen?
-how high do you think your eyes are when seated?
-how high will the centerpoint of the screen be, or what is the lowest it can go (if center speaker is under)?

*the last few q's are just to get an idea of overall geometry.

I am positive that you would love the screen that I use, retro-reflective, but I'm afraid the 9ft height of PJ is not going to allow it. Damn. I know you'd love it. Lots of pop, great ambient light rejection, virtually eliminates the need for tab-tensioning ($$$$).

Don't worry about looking directly into PJ. Just don't do it.

Using the PJ calc for throw/size, the 6500 will have no problem with the sizes you will most likely consider.

FWIW, a few of us here use a JVC and we love them. rmk got his for a steal as demo, and I got mine for a steal as open box. Keep dem eyes peeled.

I haven't came up with a budget yet since I am just now looking into this.

The seating will be right at 12ft from the screen.

Eyes are right at 42" when seated.

If I keep my center where it is now, the screen could go as low as 19" from the ground

I don't know how much it shifts, but I think you may have to flip it to put it at 9ft tall.

Mine sits at around 5' "9 and has to have books to bring the image down to a comfortable height. 4' higher and you may as well flip it over IMO.

PJ's are a very finicky setup. Getting the picture just right can take a while.

Starting with the basics there are tons of sites with writeups on things including here, as well as www.projectorcentral.com and www.projectorreviews.com I would start with doing some homework there. The projector itself is an excellent choice and is easily one of the best models under $3K on the market right now.

The ceiling fan jumps out as me as the most obvious issue. Basically, if you can't draw a straight line from the top of the lens, to the top of the screen because anything is in the way, then you have to move that 'anything' to get a clear line of sight.

Sounds like you addressed that already as something you are aware of.

The 6500 has a lot of lens shift, something which some projectors don't have. So, Isiberian, who has to use books to bring his image down, is not something you will have to deal with. Instead, you will get optical lens shift which will allow you to place the projector a foot or more above the projected image (read reviews for specifics).

At 12' viewing, with that quality projector, you really should be shooting for about a 110" diagonal or so as a minimum. This would put you in the right range for THX specifications and a 'center of the theater' feel to your projection. The obvious issue is that you are going to have to watch the overall width of the screen including the border & bar at the bottom to ensure they don't interfere with your speakers.

Now, if you have the speakers out from the wall a bit and can squeak the screen in so that it falls between a flat panel display and your speakers, then that can give you a few extra inches which may be excellent for your setup.

My typical statements...

If you are going to be using a retractable screen then go with a cheap manual screen or go with a tab-tensioned motorized screen. Non-tab-tensioned screens WILL develop waves in the materials after a year or two of use due to environmental reasons (not because you roll it up). So, you don't want to spend extra $$$ on a motorized screen and then have it be just as bad looking as a cheap manual screen a couple of years down the road. That's basically throwing money away.

You can go cheap, then look for deals online, which can give you some good value if you are tight on cash to start off with, or you can go to the usual manufacturers including Da-Lite, Draper, or Stewart.

This is an excellent screen, but shows that you have limited choices for a fair amount of savings when you go to eBay...
http://cgi.ebay.com/DA-LITE-88524-106-Tab-Tension-Motorized-Film-Screen_W0QQitemZ180354809040QQihZ008QQcategoryZ48655QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

106" - but a flat white screen, yet the built in low-voltage controls are a nice addition, and the eBay price is less than cost - which makes the price very good.

In your room, if you are going to stick with what I imagine is light colored walls, white ceiling, and medium carpeting, you will get some (small) benefit from a grey screen. Something like the HC Cinema Vision from Da-Lite or similar from other manufacturers is good.

Plan to spend about $2K or so on the screen if you don't find something you are really happy with on eBay. Yet, if $2K is to much, then I would strongly consider what I linked to above. Bottom line is that 106" sized tab-tensioned screens don't show up that often (I look) from quality manufacturers. I personally lucked into one a few years back and it has been great.

You will want to plan for mounting the screen appropriately which means with a kick-off from your wall to allow for it to come in front of your display. This may also mean building a soffit around the screen to hide it from view. Keep in mind that screens are rarely pretty to look at.

I'm not 100% sure where ventilation is with the 6500, but you want to be sure to be far enough away from walls and obstructions, per the manual specifications, to allow for proper ventilation of the projector.

Finally - don't forget that this stuff all needs power to work, and I didn't see an outlet up on that wall. You will need to deal with that appropriately.

Finally (again) - consider the room lighting with spotlight type lamps to allow for reading while the projector is on.

Check: http://www.avintegrated.com/lighting.html for an idea of how directional lighting can really allow for multi-purpose use of the room while still enjoying your projector.

Thanks for the info links, I do have plenty of homework to do.

The ceiling fan is a no brainer and easy fix.

My speakers are 13'' from the back wall so looks like that will work out.

I do want a tab-tensioned motorized screen.

I have a spot light type light that shines on the couch from above the fireplace so I should be good there.

My Brother in Law is an electrician so power is never an issue.

Great to hear. PJs are awesome mine doesn't even use a screen and looks great. I can't imagine what a 1080p projected on a great screen would look like. :D

Well, this may get put on hold for a year. She said we will get a pool and outdoor kitchen before I spend more on the HT. It's all cool, it will give me more time to study up on PJs and maybe the price will go down more. Heck, maybe they will even have a 75" plasma for 5k by then and I will just stick that on the wall.
