My troubleshooting goes in this order

Cable Check(it happens)
Settings Check.

I suggest you start by working your way through your manual. You don't want to miss a nice feature. Then if you can't figure it out. Come back here and Adam our manual jedi master will help you. :) He's really that awesome.

08op,

To help isolate the source of the problem, recommend the following:

1) As a test, hook up the DVD player directly to the TV using the hdmi cable in question.

a) If the test works, you can discount the cable or the DVD player and it's settings as the culprit and concentrate on the receiver settings (with Adam's help as necessary :D ).

b) If the test does not work, try using a different hdmi cable to help isolate if it is the original hdmi cable or the DVD player/settings.

c) If you are able to eliminate the hdmi cable as the culprit, I would look carefully at your DVD players settings. Partly because you indicated the cable box is working and I assume you mean cable box to TV thru the RX-V465.

Best of Luck and congratulations on your marriage,

For some reason the HDMI 1 is designated as BD/DVD. Are you using this for the DVD player?

(c) leads me to believe it is a settings issue. You are not using a seperate digital cable (coax/ optical) for the DVD audio are you?

I tried looking for the manual on the Yamaha site, but it requires one to log in. Stupid.

465 to TV, using HDMI or "3-wire" Monitor Out ?

08op,

Sorry, there was not a quick fix. :(

Please confirm you are using two HDMI cables, one HDMI cable from the DVD to the 465, and another HDMI cable from the 465 to the TV via the "HDMI OUT" port on the 465--your statement above about "unplug tv from monitor out on rxv" made me wonder.

I own a 565 and it's manual states:

"Only video signals input to this unit via the component input terminals are output from the component output terminals" (Note; the same limitation also applies to composite video, the really old style one-wire connection)

Which is crappy Yammy speak for the 565 does not down-convert an HDMI video signal input to the 465 (i.e. from the DVD) to the three-wire component output (i.e. monitor out).

The 465 will behave the same as the 565--even though the 465 manual is less clear on how the 465 works video internally. This video connection mismatch would explain the no-video problem, and is also related to the sound returning when the monitor out is disconnected--due to settings discussed in your 465 manual on p. 42 under Function Setup, 1. HDMI, Audio.

I downloaded the 465 manual and have some ideas, but they are predicated on everything being connected together with HDMI.

The 465 does not do up converting from all inputs to the HDMI output. HDMI to HDMI only. If you have anything using component cables, you must use the component out to your TV to see anything. If your TV is only 720p, be sure your not up convert from the DVD player to 1080p, the TV will display nothing. Connect a regular video cable and or Component cable to see if the DVD player works from other outputs. Then see what the current settings are and change them to match your TV.

Thankfully you got the 465, the 365 only does HDMI switching...no audio to the receiver via HDMI

08op,

Thanks for clearing up the cabling confusion. I assume you tested both HDMI cables with the direct connect from DVD to TV, and they both checked out OK.

Looking in the 465 manual, here are a couple items which may be causing the strange audio behavior. I am at a loss on the no picture part, but have a test below to hopefully help narrow the field.

1) Start on p42, "Function Setup", "1. HDMI", "Standby", check what your 465 is set to (please report it in your next post). If not set to "ON" please change it to read so.

This will allow a test to see if the DVD can pass video and/or audio signals through the 465 with the 465 in standby (but not completely Off) and get a proper picture and/or sound (using the TV's speakers only).

If this test works, then the receiver's settings may still be able to fix the problem. If the test fails (especially for video), and the cables checked out previously, the problem could very well be the 465's HDMI connector or circuits and it would be time to talk to Yammy customer service.

To perform this test for audio you will need to check/change the "Audio" setting as well.

2) Again on p42, "Function Setup", "1. HDMI", "Audio", check what your 465 is set to (please report it in your next post). Change the setting as follows:

If set to "Amp" change to "Amp+TV" to allow the test referenced above and see if the audio portion of the problem gets resolved.

If set to "TV" this would potentially explain why the audio is not being produced by the speakers connected to your 465. Change to "Amp+TV" for the test, and then to just "Amp" to see if the audio problem gets resolved.

If set to "Amp+TV" try the test, and then set to just "Amp" to see if changing it fixes the audio portion of the problem.

Best of Luck (again) :(
