What's the process to redo the finish on my subs? I want to do black to match the rest of my equipment, can I just go over the existing finish or do I need to remove it first?

I'll make it easy for ya - I'll swap you a black ASW1000 for one of those. :D

What finish do you have on their now? Those are stained, correct? Were they sealed?

I believe they were just stained, no sealer.

I would just veneer it with Black Ash Laminate. But I suppose you could try your hand at painting it. Sanding it will help prepare it for painting.

It's a cherry stain on them now.

Never laminated anything before so I think staining would be an easier and cheaper method. Plus I like the grain of the brich ply.;)

Well, maybe Alex will pop back on today and give you the proper way to do it. Until then, you could always ask at Home Depot or the like. :) Speaking of the Depot, I still have yet to get there today. Soon. Very soon.

I'm looking online now and I'm almost positive the guy that built these for me said he didn't use a sealer in case I wanted to stain them another color.

I'm really not a painter. You should know what you have on there. Is it alcohol, oil or water base? Why not just have your cabinet guy shoot it with paint? He'll get a better finish in a shop than you could ever come up with at home.

If you insist on doing this on your own I suggest you lightly sand with 220 grit paper in the direction of the grain using a block or sanding sponge to wrap the sand paper around. Vacuum the dust off and wipe with a tack cloth. Home Depot will have all that. You can roll a couple of coats of Bin or Binz primer on it. The product has a bull's eye logo. It is alcohol base and will seal that wood and color in. Then spray with the color of choice.

That's what I can come up with off the top of my head but I strongly urge you to try painting something that is less valuable first.

I will also say I am not a painter however I think if you want the birch grain to show a little bit you could use triple000 steel wool and go with the grain of the box then apply a darker walnut stain wipe on generous then wipe off with another rag when dry do the steel wool again then go another coat of the stain when you are happy with color stop and go clear. Now I am really not even close to the expert painter but I have used and seen this technique work.

DO NOT, and i mean, DO NOT. take any advice from the people that work in those stores. they have a BAD reputation in the home improvement forums. and they have told me wrong. i don't listen to them. no offence to them, but to them, its only a job.

Yeah, when i read asking at home depot i thought to myself. Yeah good luck with that

I know there are exceptions, as with any store. But for the most part the people that work in those places havent got a clue.

I just took a look at these again:

Birch has a pretty smooth grain and will not show very well through paint. The end grain showing the plies will show and it's not pretty. Some edge banding would have been completely in order on this. At this point I would Bondo everything so that it is ready to receive an automotive grade finish. The only feasible way to get past that end grain and be able to see an anodized grain pattern on that is to apply an Oak veneer which is much more coarse than Birch.

The help at HD has improved a lot since 7,000 of their employees got the axe. ;)
All that's left at my HD is the cream of the crop and they just fawn over the customers trying to help.
Sometimes I just go in to get a little respect. :)

No, I think it's just the way photobucket compresses the pics. I may do what Haloeb did and bondo, sand and paint them black.

That's cool. Just a suggestion. I have a friend from the neighborhood that works there, and he generally gives me good advice when I'm down there. Another guy helped me with a good suggestion on fixing my irrigation system today. Maybe I'm just lucky to live by one with helpful people.

:D I wouldn't be so sure about the check-out dude in the Garden Center today. Me thinks that he's been putting his knowledge of fertilizer and proper watering to the test.
