line level or speaker level

What would be the best connection between a Yamaha RX497 2-channel receiver, KEF IQ3 speakers, and a Velodyne Impact Mini sub. My listening area is about 15x12. Is there an advantage of one connection over another? Thanks in advance for any information.

Unless the speakers are powered or you're hooking up an external amp, you will want to use the speaker level for the speakers, and line level to go to the sub's amp.

I would hook up the sub via the subwoofer out. I looked up your receiver and it does have one according to spec.

But for fun I suggest you give both a try just to see if you have one you like better. Unless of course you don't have enough spare speaker cable lying around.:)

I would imagine that your 2 channel reciever does not have a crossover built in that will separate the bass to the sub and the mid range to the speakers If you do have a crossover then disregard this point. By using the speaker outputs to the sub you will be able to cross over the front speakers and eliminate the lower frequencies and perfectly integrate with your subwoofer. This may result in a better over all sound quality from the system. However like Isiberian said trying both would be the best option. By the way what kind of an Audioholic does not have piles of extra speaker wire laying around from upgrades and rearranging rooms constantly.
