binding posts and connectors

I recently bought Behringer B2021P's, and I have them connected to my Adcom GFA 545II through just bare speaker wire. I wanted to make some DIY speaker cables and started researching about all of the different types. On the binding posts of the B2031's, there is a small plastic piece inside in the middle of the connector. There is no way a banana plug would fit, which is what most people prefer. Would spade plugs stay connected easily? Is there a way that I could take the plastic piece out to use banana plugs?

Thanks
