Thanks a lot for making this thread, speakerman. It clearly took a lot of effort, and it just so happens to come just as I start my sub shopping! Very thoughtful of you.

So for 100% HT use, you'd definitely recommend the SVS PB12-NSD over the Hsu 3.3? I'm currently debating between those (as are half the people on this forum, I'd wager) and was leaning toward the Hsu, but if the SVS is as good as you say, AND $200 less AND has recently been updated to be even better to boot AND comes in handy-dandy lighter cylinder flavor...uh, it's starting to seem like a no-brainer for my needs (My needs = a kickarse HT sub for a 3500 cubic-foot, third-floor-walk-up studio apartment). Am I wrong? Someone want to chime in here and gleefully complicate what's finally starting to look like an easy choice?

Yes, the PB12-NSD was no doubt the best for ht. However, I did not run the Hsu 3.3 in MAX Extension mode. As such, it may have been a closer call on that one. However, for your size of room I would venture to say that you will need dual subs of some sorts. Two PB10-NSDs would be stellar. Might want to check with SVS to see what they recommend. I am sure they will not try to over sale you. Thanks for your kind words and good luck in your decision.

You know, you were supposed to just say "yes" and make my decision easier.

I've actually been talking with sales reps from Hsu and SVS, giving them my room dimensions and my budget of $800 max. Hsu recommended the 3.3., but said even a 2.3 might do all right, while SVS said a single PC12-NSD should work great in my room up to "moderately loud" volumes. So I feel like either the 3.3. or PC12-NSD would perform admirably for me. (Short side note--both companies, as well as eD, had impressively swift customer service, but SVS was just extra helpful.)

I guess what I'm asking is, if the 3.3 and PC12-NSD would be such a close call performance-wise anyway, can you (or anyone else) think of any reason not to go with SVS?

When I had my HSU 3.3 I ran it a lot in max extension mode and in my open room with little room gain, the 3.3 easily went down to 13hz with good output. I doubt the PB12 can do that unless its corner loaded in a sealed room. The port tuning is just over 16hz in ME mode. The PB12 will have about 3dB more output though. I thought the 3.3 in ME was excellent especially if you are going to EQ it.

I see. Well, to be honest I never even cared for running my 3.3 in MAX EXT mode. Thus, I wanted more output in the >30 Hz range. The reason being my preference for musical performance. In MAX OUTPUT mode, I was easily getting extension into the mid 20's which was plenty for my needs. However, you may be surprised just how good the PB12-NSD was with ht. Musically speaking, it has been improved as well.
