how hot is to hot for an AV cabinet?

ive always left the door of my entertainment center open when the avr is in use, but my recent 876 purchase has got me wondering how hot is to hot?

i placed a digital thermometer in my cabinet, and i get to around 90 +/- 3 when in use, and low 80s when not in use and the door closed....

keep in mind, house is usually in the 70's, dish receiver is always on

Heat shortens the life of electronics. So if the house is 70, I'd shoot for as close to that as possible.

If it were me, I'd take advantage of the fact that heat rises and install an exhaust fan in the back near the top.
Then give it a way to pull in cool air at the lowest point, where the air is naturally coolest.

I have a similar situation with heat in my tv stand. Do you think a low noise computer case fan, connected to an ac to dc converter plugged into my avr's switched ac power socket would work? I think most computer stuff is 12 volts and I bet I have an unused adapter with enough amps laying around. Plugging it into switched ac power on the back of my avr would turn it on and off with the avr. In theory it sounds like a solid plan, any thoughts?

Sure, that's what I have. It works out well.

Your Dish receiver looks like mine. It is easily the hottest thing in the rack. Fortunately, my rack is open.

it does get rather warm... i just thought of something...

i have a notebook cooler that i use it sit under the laptop and has 2 fans that pull heat away from the bottom of it and is usb powered...

i wonder if something like that would be beneficial to put under the dish receiver? i guess it sure wouldn't hurt anything...

I'd think that it would be more beneficial to flip that cooler upside down and put it on top of the Dish receiver. They sell coolers like that, but I'm not sure how much different they are then an upside down laptop cooler.

yikes, i just found a thread on another forum about the heat the 622 puts out...

if you go to Menu>System Setup>Diagnostics>Counters you can see the high/low/average temp of the hard drive...

mine is...

High 138
Low 104
Avg 116

i might try the cooler pad on the bottom for a month and see if it fluctuates...

i also just for kicks layed a cooking thermometer, like this

on the top of my 876, it has seemed to level off at 120... seems a bit warm... should i be concerned? i would think the nature of the beast that these things are built with high heat in mind... but at what point should i worry?

I just checked mine. It's in a cabinet that has venting slots in the bottom and has an opened back, and no fan.
