Unusual question-need help

Every thing was going fine for me, got everything my budget could afford, and was a happy Audioholic. Then a little bird told me that I need a power conditioner instead of just a surge-protector. So I buy one and now I think my problem deals directly due to the surge protector.
I have a history of tinitis, and I am able to deal with it and still enjoy my music, but now it is really bothering me even without using my system. can the surge protector be emiting and audio sound sound in the high range that you actually cannot hear but is irritating the heck out of my tinitis,(ringing or busing in the ear). So is there a kind of meter that can read sound admission so I can tell for sure it is the power conditioner that is causeing the problem?
Oh, Tinitis is a serious problem that can be avoided if you protect your ears around loud and especially high frequency, trust me protect your ears!!!

Tinnitus is a drag. Protect your ears. Use earplugs when useful. You can get custom molded ones, with swappable filters for differing strength, which will give you a flatter EQ (but still not very flat; don't use for critical listening). Drive with the windows up.

It's not just high frequencies that damage hearing or cause tinnitus. This is a misconception. It's just that the damage/injury shows itself in the higher registers. Lower frequencies like bass that is too loud will injure your ears just as well, but it just simply shows itself as some higher frequency ringing.

Give your ears a rest for a little while. Perhaps a few days or more. I had some on/off ringing after finishing the Band of Brothers series, probably cranked too much for my own good. After a few days, it subsided. Soon after, watching other movies, ringing reared its head a bit again. Took more time off.

It's all good now. I also am lowering the volume a few DB. Still loud, just not holy $%!# loud.

your power conditioner certainly may be emitting a sound.

The easiest way to check would probably be to just unplug it and see if your still affected

Very possible. Some devices emit a high frequency that "kicks on" my tinnitus. Electronics and older TVs (CRTs) usually jumpstart it really quick. When I lived with my parents and they had a CRT I could actually tell when they turned it on from anywhere in the house...

Annoying little pest tinnitus is.

Thanks so much for your replys. I took the power conditioner off line last night and this morning my my ears feel a heck of lot better. darn it, its the new power conditioner. Even in the stand by mode. Did not realize how many others have this condition, tinnitis, and yes diving with the car windows down even bothers it. And it does fluctuate alot and taking time out is a very good idea. Now I am going to see if I can return this power conditioner?

I remember reading about a high pitched noise that emited from Samsung LCD TVs. They are not supposed to do that, but as most people don't hear it, manufacturers do not worry about it.
I think you can return it and get one that does not emit that high pitched noise.

I don't know how the little birds talk to you, but I suggest you not listen to them. Keep the Power conditioner off line.

very interesting I also have severe tinnitus,9 years now and it never gets any better but somedays just a little worse than others.I bought an APC-15 power conditioner and have not really noticed if its made this any worse off but since I have been messing around with my two kappas I have had more ringing that stays constant but I love subs so hope fully I can get all levels just right.I would like to add that in many cases of tinnitus the onset had absolutely nothing to do with sound levels,it can come from a blow to the head.severe pneumonea ,even people that have had wisdom teeth pulled reported ringing in their ears that wont go away,I abused music , worked with power tools for many years without ear protection and now I/we suffer with this horrible disease. Turn each device off, one at a time. If the sensation still exists, turn the conditioner off. Then, remove the conditioner from the system. If, at that point, you no longer have the sensations, it's the conditioner.

It's possible that the conditioner has a circuit that's ultrasonic and sometimes it feels like a weird sort of pressure with no actual pitch associated with it.

I only suffered short term "tinnitus" after a rock concert many years ago (lasted about two days thank god) Now the only annoying sound in my ears is when my GF wants to talk about our "relationship" during a good show or movie.

Agree, try turning off the power conditioner to see if that is the cause. If it is try exchanging it for another one to see if it was just the device and if the 2nd has this issue, try another brand or hire an electrician to install a "line conditioner" on the electrical box outside. May cost about the same as the device you bought for protection.

Well the good news is they said I can return it with stocking fee, which I am more then happy to pay. I just want it out of the house, and enjoy what I have.
First I tried the "Power Plant Premire", and that unit really did a great job, improved the sound also and did not bother my ears, but it really got hotter the an Onkyo, and the twin fans in it never would kick in.
The I tried the monster 5100, just under $700, it did not up grade the audio much, but it did a good job of cleaning up the noise like it is suppose to do, and most important did not bother my ears. Gave that unit to my wife, guess I will take it back and buy her something cheaperShe will not know the difference.

BTW, I do use a amp pre-amp and I went with the tube, because when I tried solid state, it made the sound very sharp, but for most people normal ears a desired sound. The Tube amp seem to polish off the edges and I can even play slightly louder as a result. Hay, How did S-X get into this

I did not name the unit that set off my tinnitis because I feel it is a great piece of equipment and not to give it a bad rap because of my short comings.
