Which receiver is best?

I have the following receivers selected at the moment,

Yamaha DSP-AX863 $687.00 ... I guess the 2009 version of this would be the RX-V765BL
Onkyo TX-SA507 $475.00
DENON AVC-1610 $500.00

Don't know if there are any 2009 upgrades from this list or not. I am planning on putting together a 5.1 system for my apartment, possibly upgrading to 7.1 when we buy a house in the next year or 2. What are your thoughts on which I should choose? Thanks for the help.

All are good brands, but I would have to go with Denon. Denon are generally very reliable, have a full Audyssey suite, and generally meet or come close to meeting their stated power specs.

I would have to agree with rnatalli. At this price point I would say go with the Denon, as long as it has the features that you need.

Good suggestion. Especially AC4L as they have good deals on Marantz receivers. I'd take a Marantz over everything in the original post.

But can you find a Marantz in the same price range with all the features offered in the others? I was looking at receivers around $400 on accessories4less and the Onkyos had a lot more features for the money. The Marantz seemed to be lacking things. I'd love to get the Marantz. . . .

Onkyo will generally have more features than a Marantz at the same price point, but Marantz have the better build quality and reliability. It depends on what you need or want. For example, if your BR player can internally decode HD and send it PCM over HDMI, you don't care about Audyssey, don't need a fancy GUI, and are running all HDMI so upconversion isn't needed, the Marantz SR4002 (brand new) from AC4L is tempting at $319.

All these brands are excellent (Denon, Yamaha & Onkyo).

Just compare their feature's list, and also try to get one with preouts for all channels, but they will probably be more expensive. But it is a very nice feature to have, if you want to add more power in the future, when you move to your new house. So, look for preouts for all channels.

Denon is a good match with brighter speakers, in general (as well as Marantz).
Yamaha is a good match with smoother speakers.
And Onkyo is good with Klipsch speakers and efficient speakers.

Pick the one that have the best feature's list for you and that can match best with your speakers, and future expansion too.

Is the best receiver the one you really love to have or the one you own now?

Me, I love all my previous receivers (Kenwood, Pioneer, Marantz, Yamaha, Denon and few others), and the last two ones are THEE ONES.

I don't want the Lexicon RV-9 or Yamaha RX-Z11 or Denon AVR-5308ci or Pioneer Elite SC-09 or NAD T 785 or Integra DTR-9.9; first, because I cannot afford them, so I stay realist with my objectives and true needs. And second, because with my Onkyo TX-SR805 and TX-SR876, I got two very satisfying receivers. And soon with an Emotiva XPA-3, I should be all set.

And at the great value I got all my receivers, I don't have a choice, but to love them. And I take my time before I buy. And I check all around for reviews, and forums too.

So, in the end the best receiver is the one that you are willing to pay for (and 90% of the time, you will end up paying less), and the one you enjoy listening music and watching movies with. Great thrills and great emotions that you get from it. Great pleasure in your ears.
Why complicate life by checking at the neighbour, when all the joy is in your own backyard.

That's my way of seeing things.
