Help w/ EP2500, FBQ2496 and Kappa builds

Hi,

Was wondering if you could help me with this? I have been running the sub for over a week now but have encountered a problem with the EP2500 used in conjunction with a FBQ2496. I also am using a FMOD at 20hz.

1. I use my rat shack mic and avr to set the speakers at 75db which comes to around 0 on my master volume.

2. To achieve a 75db for my sub the EP2500 has to be all the way up and the sub gain on my avr is now just 2 clicks south of maxed.

3. With this setup I cannot go higher than -15 on my AVR before the clip light blinks constantly on my EP2500, with my mic I am getting about 100db peaks with the sub.

4. The sub sounds terrific, and will now build my second, that is if I can figure this all out beforehand. There is a lot more gas in the tank and I have to figure out a way to use it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

thanks, Sam

That sounds weird, my knob on my EP2500 is 2 clicks from the minimum setting to calibrate at 75db. I don't know much about the 2496 but there is a gain you can set on it, maybe it is to low????

Are you sure you have the toggles set properly on the 2500 for running bridged?

Bypass the 2496 and see what happens.

I'm not familar with the FBQ, but are you sure that the AVR can output enough voltage to feed the FBQ? You may need a consumer to pro line voltage convertor such as the Samson S Convert.

On the back of your BFD there is a +4/-10 adjustment, make sure its on -10.

Let us know if that fixes it for you.

Have you...

Tried taking out the high-pass filter? Do you have a CD player/DVD player that you can take a channel of audio directly to the amp?

I am with WmAx, the input voltage is crucial for full power. I had the same problem and then added the Samson and it fixed the problem.

Yes, the link is in WmAx's post. The samson s-convert.

So I can go from RCA input to RCA output? And would this go from the AVR-Samson-FBQ2496-EP2500 link? Or should I just dump the FMOD and not bother with the Samson and grab a Reckhorn B1? Or will I be in the same situation?

You need a highpass filter or you will blow your sub.

I believe the F-mod is a 2nd order high pass filter so it will take out LFE as you extend.

I still find it hard to believe you can feed enough voltage to the FBQ. Check your receiver settings. Make sure you max out the sub volume on the receiver.

What type of connector are you using from the AVR to the FBQ & EP2500?

You should be running unbalanced RCA to XLR. You should also be able to control the input gain on the FBQ I would assume. Bring up the input gain some.

I have the input gain on my DCX2496 set to +3db. The output gain is then set at 0db, but could be set higher if needed. My gain knob on my EP2500 is set at the 10:00 position.

No can do with the FBQ, no gain on it. Gain is set first from the AVR. I am running rca to rca with 1/4" Male Mono to RCA Female Adapter to EP2500. Have a link for a
rca to xlr connector? thanks....

How would I go about checking the output voltage of an RCA pre-out?
I have an H/K AVR 430. I couldn't find the info in the manual.

http://www.harmankardon.com/product_support/support_detail.aspx?Region=USA&Country=US&Language=ENG&cat=&prod=AVR 430&sjump=&ky=D95AD0BC95B275D27AAEF4E2990AAF41&#active

I'm considering using a laptop with a sound card as a player for a second 2 channel system and would be interested in checking the pre-out voltage on that too. I understand that some of these voltage converters act as a low frequency cut off and that is of interest to me at the moment because I will be using ...

Whoops, I won't go too far here. Threadjack faux pas (spelling problems maybe)

1. How do you check the voltage?
2. Suggestions for frequency limiting voltage converters.

Thanks for all of the input everyone, but after doing some reading I think I just may chuck everything and keep it simple. So, would the O Audio 500W amp be a good match?

I am running bridged mode and I have a fmod connected...is this correct?
thanks...

Looks correct. Nothing in the "input 2" should matter since you are running Mono-bridged. You are using the two center speaker terminals and have the input 2 turned all the way down...correct?

I would imagine with a voltmeter or multimeter??
