For this price, I can recommend solutions superior to standard retail products. I can specify pre-fabricated box, driver, amp, etc.; all you have to do is assemble it and adjust the settings. All you need is a screwdriver, drill and jig saw(you can buy cheap ones for like $10-$20 if you don't have the tools already).

Do you prefer a 10", 12", or a 15"? How big is your room? Flat ceiling or vaulted? Do you plan to keep the sub for the long run, or is it just something to hold you over? The more info we have, the better able we are to help you. ;);)

Cheers,

Phil

Hi Phil,

I am looking for a 12" sub. I want something which should last at least the next 3-4 years and gives me enough oomph so that I don't feel like upgrading it :)

Hope this helps!!!:p

They did. :) Well, at least this design here. It's a sticky in the DIY section, so it's not linked in the subwoofer section (although perhaps it should be).

How big is your room? Flat ceilings or vaulted? Does the room open up to other areas/rooms? The more info we have the better we can assist you. Chris can help you a lot if you want to go the DIY route. That is his specialty. If not, you may want to look at the Hsu VTF-3 MK III. It is a very impressive sub. How about checking into the used market? Sometimes, great deals can be found that way. ;);) Good luck in your decision. Be sure to keep us posted.

Cheers,

Phil

The driver that Steve uses per my recommendation is not by any means normal. It has a motor system that is very unique; a LMS motor designed by T.C. Sounds/Audio Pulse. This 12" driver has more real (verified by 3rd party analysis) linear air displacement capability than most 15" good quality drivers! It is especially suited to sealed cabinets (very simple to build if you wanted to DIY your own box, and with relatively small size) of about 3-4 cubic feet each. It requires one parametric band of EQ to compensate for the response error of this size box. The O Audio branded 500 watt BASH amplifier is perfect. It has the parametric band for the correction, and is very high quality, and produces sufficient power for the driver, although even more power would be beneficial. Combine this with the pre-made/pre-painted 3 cubic foot cabinet from www.partsexpress.com and you have a subwoofer, that for about $700-$800, will surpass anything commercial/retail for the same price in so far as overall sound quality and SPL levels, averaged, are concerned.

I didn't realize the 15" drivers where that cheap?

I also didn't know the O Audio did correction. Of course I'm still getting an ep2500 and building JL Audio 8w7s I just love the idea a 1.5 cu ft box

Be sure to PM me with the box design and port you intend to use to I can proof check that for you.

The 8w7s will be interesting, in that no one will believe they are producing the bass they hear. They will be looking for hidden subs in your room. :)

They are roughly equal in frequency response and fidelity. However, the Kappa Perfect design has more SPL ability in the 18-30Hz band due to the advantage given by the huge slot port. However, if you compared the Kappa Perfect and the SW8200 drivers, both in sealed cabinets, the SW8200 would decimate the Kappa Perfect in the 18-40Hz band, due to the incredible linear displacement offered by the TC Sounds designed LMS motor used on the SW8200. The simplicity (and available pre-made cabinet) and much smaller size cabinet you can get by with using the SW8200 is not a free lunch when you consider the reduced low end output capability. But, the SW8200 will still produce more SPL and be FAR higher in sound quality as compared to a retail product in it's same price class, if you use it as I specify.

Chris u say the SW8200 "will create moderate SPL with extremely high fidelity. If you want huge SPLs, you need to use at least 2 of them"

What max sound level could we expect from a single sub ?
...& would making the box a little larger have any affect, or is it a case of just add more watts ?

Well, in a closed 2000 cubic foot room, corner loaded and with an ideal seating location that is not in a cancellation/null zone, you could realistically expect to get 107-110dB at 20Hz-30Hz, 115dB at 40Hz on up, with a 800-1000 watt amplifier. Compare this to the Kappa Perfect avaserfi specified slotted enclosure system, when powered by 1000+ watts, being able to produce 115-118dB at 22Hz on up with identical placement/room.

As for using a larger internal sealed volume for the SW8200; this will have some effect, but not enough to make the trade off of size worth the effort. You may as well go ahead and build the Kappa Perfect slot ported cabinet system if you are willing to use a substantially larger volume and DIY your own cabinet.
