Thanks for the feedback, but changing 802 locations is unfortunately not an option for me. (They've been carefully matched to the room, and also would be a nightmare anywhere near the TV location.)
My plan is to keep the stereo as-is, but feed two video preamp outputs to the AUX 2 stage of the (Levinson) preamp and pass the signal through to the speakers. The fronts would get powered by a separate (3 chan) power amp. I understand I'd have to power up the stereo to do this, and set it to a predetermined volume. That's a nuisance, but I can live with it, unless, of course, there's a more intelligent solution that wouldn't require turning on and fiddlint with the stereo to listen to HT.
This lets me keep the stereo as is, and also doubles it as a surround for the TV. However, I know very little about setting up home theater, and would appreciate any further advice from this BBS.
