No sound from Home Theater with Rogers HD Cable Box

Good Morning,

I have a problem with no sound coming through my Home Theatre speakers with my Rogers HD cable box.

I have the following set-up and connections…

1) Rogers HD cable box (CB)
2) Sony Bravia KDL-40S4100 TV (TV)
3) Sony DAV-HDX475 Home Theatre / DVD (HT) and 5.1 surround speakers
4) Nintendo Wii game console (Wii)

The CB is connected to the TV via HDMI 1.3. The HT is connected to the TV via HDMI 1.3. The Wii is connected to the TV via Component Video (Red, Green and Blue cables) and audio (Red and White). The TV sound is then output back to the HT via digital optical (clear cable) into the “TV/Video” input. Theoretically, any sound coming into and being output by the TV should go to the HT speakers. I have turned off the TV speaker, so that I get my sound through the 5.1 surround (HT set to TV/Video). It works perfectly for the DVD and the Wii (and used to work perfectly with my Bell Xpressvu box, which was not HD). The problem is that I get a great picture, but no sound through my 5.1 speakers when watching TV. I know the sound is getting into the TV, because if I turn on the TV speaker, I get sound from there. I know that sound is able to come through the digital optical cable to the HT, because I get sound through the speakers from the Wii.

Is there some setting that I am missing?

Thanks :),

Someone correcct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like your TV simply may not have the ability to convert HDMI audio to digital optical.

Most TV's I've encountered only send out audio from their internal ATSC tuners through their optical outputs. They don't convert and/or pass through any other audio, at least as far as I have noticed.

Most TV's do, however, pass through red/white analog audio though.

You are correct Sir - the OP should run audio to the Sony HT system first then to the TV (if possible with that model).

Sending a digital signal out from an HDMI input is now an illegal conversion.
