Identify this microphone?

Well, I know what it is. It's an Audio Technica PR80. It was given to me with the capsule wires broken. I soldered them back and it works fine. It actually sounds OK too. I figure I can use it as an M/C mic. I'm just curious what price bracket it was in and I'm just looking for more info. I can't find any! Web searches bring up an Edirol PR-80 dual stream DV presenter. Does anyone have any info on this mic?

I have a few of their condenser mics- two cardioid and one omni-directional and they're really good sounding. I did a PCM recording of a band in '82 using my cardioids and a Sony PCM-F1 processor with outstanding results.

Mics with a switch on them are only good for talkback from FOH to stage.....IMO of course....

I do sound for acoustic bands (bluegrass) and I use Audio Technica PRO37 condenser mics for most instruments. They sound great and reject feedback well. I have some Sennheiser E835s as vocal mics and I like them a lot. I haven't used the PR80 yet but I tested it at home and my voice comes through nice and clear without muddiness.

EDIT: jamie2112, I have a similar opinion. Switches cause issues with people turning them off. It seems many mics with switches are reminiscent of cheap RadioShack stuff too but this one appears to be well built. I have a cheap Shure Prologue 24L I use as a talkback mic. This mysterious PR80 certainly sounds better than that and seems to be better built.

It may be well built. I have 2 SM58's with switches that sound great but I only use them to check my voice thru the PA and talkback to stage. You are a sound guy what would you use it on?........

Hahhaa well probably nothing other than for the MC... plus I'd disable the switch. I'm just curious about these kinds of things. When I can't find any information at all I get more curious... Counterfeit? It says Japan on it...

AT is a Japanese company and it may just be so out of date that they don't have any info on it at all. I would say it ain't worth much brother.....

Audio Technica PR80 Microphones

I presently have FOUR AT PR80 mikes ... have been using them to sing gospel music since 1982!!! It was my parents; sister and me back then ... since 2001, it's just been my sister and me. THEY WORK AWESOME!!!

I don't understand about the "on/off switch" issue. Anyone with common sense will look at a microphone when placing in his/her hand to make sure it's on ... or, at least, they SHOULD! DUH!!

These mikes provide a clean, crisp sound ... we have been talking about wireless, but as long as they continue to work, I don't see making another investment in equipment.

BTW, if anyone is interested in purchasing a mixer/power amp combo, let me know ... we've downsized on ours and have our previous units for sale!
