I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you aren't stealing then you have nothing to worry about.

Two issues here.

1) If people recognized the artists rights to be paid for their work and didn't steal it to begin with, this wouldn't be an issue.

2) That this blatent theft of intellectual property opens the door to "them" getting more and more control over our lives.

If you are stealing music, movies or games you are a thief and deserve whatever is the appropriate punishment.
Rather than the lame punishments that are handed out I would prefer to see the confiscation of the gear used. Said gear would then be donated to schools in the cities and towns and used for positive activities.

I would also like to see a tv show similar to "Cops" that would show the confiscation of gear and the tears that follow...awesome tv...rolling on the floor laughing tv...

Glad someone realizes the seriousness of this. This will change the way so much is done, on such a dramatic scale.

Big brother is out there and he's trying to get bigger and worse all the time. The sad thing is that the average american will vote for this without a second thought on how bad it really is. They don't just want Music, Video, and games, they said ANY files on your computer. Think about that, they are talking about all of your private files anything you have they will have access to. DO you want them to have that power? Do you think they'll just be looking for people stealing files? I sure as hell don't. This is an open invite into your private life.

In fact the company I work for has been making it's people carry a "blank" laptop if the have to travel internationally for over a year now. The "travel laptops" contain just Windows, Office, and a VPN client. They are not suppose to store any work related documents on the travel laptops or carry any company documents in electronic form of any kind through customs. You carry the blank laptop to your destination, VPN in to get your documents, then any new documents are to be VPN'd into the company and deleted (using a secure delete program) from the laptop before you travel back to the US.

I'm surprised there aren't more companies who do this. It makes perfect sense. The company doesn't have to worry as much about sensitive documents being stolen through hardware theft or something similar to what is proposed.

I had a HS classmate who went on to do work for the CIA. I met a coworker of his, and she told me that anytime she even just needed to pee, she had to shutdown the computer, remove the hard drive, and store it in a locker.

This seems like a lot of hassle over nothing. Since the software can be so easily transported, why not simply use computers procured locally?

You mean buy a new computer when you get there and throw it away before you leave or pay duty when you bring it back?

Or do you mean use a computer the customer or vendor owns? What about security?

Seems like a good approach that your company is taking, just one question - are the documents stored locally on the laptop while out of country? In a hotel, perhaps?

You don't have software that can totally reformat a borrowed computer and reinstall the basic O/S, like ghost?
