$1300 on Yamaha 4600 rendered USELESS in 3 years (what should I do)

If you want to sell it. Give me the exact model and I can look up a selling price for you.

You could also entertain offers in our classifieds area.

Then you could put the money towards an Onkyo 906 or 905 which does 1080p upconverting, has AS XT, THx Ultra 2 Cerification and I think 4 hdmi inputs it may be more, but they go for a steal at Accessories4less and you can extend the warranty if your concerned about a Recon for fairly cheap.

I don't see huge changes in 3 years video wise. None that would nullify a 906. A lot has changed already and I think we will see 1080p work its way through for a few years before 1440p or something else comes up.

With regard to the advisability of a recon DVDO Edge
1. Confirm your warranty and non-defective policy returns policy with any vendor you use. You don't want to be stuck with a restocking charge if you run into a compatability problem
2. Post and ask both about recons and the specific vendor in the thread I linked to in post #7 in this thread.

With regards to the Onkyo's, be aware that the excessive heat generation that resulted in fires in the xx5's continues in the xx6's. Another issue is Onkyo's widely reported lack of customer support. Read up on them first!

The reason I mentioned the Denon 2309 was to give you a relatively inexpensive receiver upgrade option. Another such option would be the Yamaha 863. If the video processing options at this level are not enough for you, it would take at least going to last year's Yamaha 3800 (still a current model) to keep what you have audio-wise and add HDMI processing.

Since you already have the 4600, and are aware of the desireability of having separate video processing, the DVDO is the way I'd go.

So the place seems ok for returns. They use Google Checkout/Paypal which gives me a decently good feeling. The warranty is 3 months and the restocking fee is 20%, which sucks but seems pretty standard.

It can be here by Friday for $529 so I think I'm going to pull the trigger once I get some info about the recon's from AVSForum.

my 705 generated less heat than my AVR247 FYI

No receiver should be trapped in a cabinet. If it's open you will be fine.

Yeah I'm in a bad situation for that.. I'll need to replace my current piece of furniture with a much more suitable one as my 4600 has limited clearance in a closed back cabinet... and by limited clearance, I mean I had to take the feet off to fit it in the cabinet. I use small plastic raisers to lift the bottom but i have less than 1/2" top clearance.

That will have to be very temporary and I'll only use the amp a movie a time until I get it out. In fact, I may be able to put it on a table next to the stand now that I'll only have a single HDMI going to it.

That is very dangerous and not suggested. Is it possible to cut a hole in the back. At the very least have a fan flow air out of the cabinet.

I know, I know....It's ghetto as hell. I'll probably take it out tonight. I don't need it until my EDGE gets here anyways.

I'll just need to look for a simple 4 legged table that will fit my sub underneath it and put it next to the cabinet. I fear that will be more difficult than shopping for electronics =/

Well I owe you a lot for pointing me to it. I never considered a video pre-processor as I thought they were all thousands of dollars. Now for $500 bux I've future proofed my Reciever's Video ability.

The pre-order will probably take a few weeks to arrive, but I'll post back when it's all said and done.
