Well I am selling my current system which is not much but I want to upgrade. I have now an Onkyo tx-8511 receiver. Two Athena AS B1 speakers, two speaker stands and a Teac PD D2410 cd player.
I use monster cable for the speaker wire and RCA gold plugs for the ins and outs
What would be as step up in performance for a 2 or perhaps a 2.1 system. I was thinking home theater, but I don't have a nice tv and it would have to be in a small bedroom since I am living with my parents for the time being. By the way I don't mind buying used items. I am still trying to figure out how much I can sell these items for locally since most people here won't be interested in them, but I would like to stay under 1000 dollars for the setup. Don't forget you advice on speaker cables etc.. I am not a big fan of monster cable but it was cheap at the time.
Thanks
Are you limited in speaker size.
Beta 20s from Infinity would be a very nice budget speaker
Basically you have 800 dollars to spend on speakers
and around 200 for a receiver.
Like a broken record. Get an HK from the Harman Kardon store or from accessories4less.
If you know what speaker brand you like then you can look for deals. If not you will need to start auditioning.
Plus for a surround system you will want a sub. On your budget you would normally spend around 400 on a sub, but since your parents may not like boomy subs and I want to get you something you can simply add to down the line. I say get a pair of TSC 8". It's only 200 dollars for the 2 subs.

For a receiver get something cheap like an HK-147.
This is a great deal get one of these.

550 is left for your speakers. If you can keep your old speakers do so. Then we can spend the 650 on 2 speakers.
Then you only need to get 2 speakers. You heard me right 2 speakers. Skip getting a center. you can phantom it and get better bookshelves. Your the only one listening so you can setup a nice sweet spot negating the need for a center.
Then you can spend your 650 on getting 2 speakers.

If you can spare the funds that would be a complete upgrade package. You would add a sub later, but that is a very very nice set of speakers and receiver.
I hope you are getting some ideas.
It really depends on how you want to do this.
Now see your options just go huge. You can get something very very nice.
What 2 speakers can you get for 600 bucks? Many options
