Home-made LCD mount?

So we have a 70's-vintage entertainment center that my wife has invested a lot of time in updating (custom drawer front, painted back with a matte cabinet paint that was a huge pain in the tuckus not to mention time consuming project not to mention she nearly ruined my garage  but that is another story...).

Net: I have an old cabinet with limited space. The biggest LCD I can put in there is a 32".

I'm pretty well set on getting the new Samsung LN32B650, which is the 120Hz panel with 1M:1 contrast, etc. The problem is I only have 22.25 inches of height to work with and the TV is 23.7" tall with the stand. Without the stand, it is 21.5".

What I'm thinking is to make a mount out of 1/2" plywood with a low-profile wall mount (since I only have 19" of depth to work with), weighted at the back to offset the ~30lb TV. I'd use metal brackets at the base where I join the front (as many as necessary)

Something like this:

Is this totally crazy? Anyone done something like this?

Not crazy at all, it cant be that hard to make a home mount..have you seen the mounts in the stores? i would go take a look at them so you can get an idea of how they are made and apply it to your project.

To save time, hassle and worry, I would check Monoprice.com..cheap & reliable mounts.

You can also check into Craigslist for some old furniture you can modify to hold the tv itself. Good luck

It wouldn't be too hard especially if you use 1/2" ply. Just make sure you make good joints.

you could also use 1 x 4". Heck you could even build a few braces on the back of the cabinet mount the metal braces there and hold the LCD that way.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Let us know what you end up doing.

This isn't a hard if you take your time and use your brain.

Join the braces to the sides or top and bottom of the cabinets. Mount the screws on that. I suggest you use at least 3 oak 1/4s, but you could use pine.
