I'm still shopping around for a decent receiver for my KEF iQ7 and found out that Denon AVR-2308 on eBay is almost the same price as Onkyo 606 at vanns.com. Which one is superior to another?

How does the Denon stand against Onkyo 705?

With almost the same amount of money, how about a 5 years old used Rotel RSX-1065 AV Receiver? Do you recommend me buying a used top notch AVR or just buy a brand new one such as Denon and Onkyo 606?

How about a Denon 789/1909 from 6th Avenue using the 25% off coupon "AFLAUD25" Comes in under $500 if I recall.

A Denon is a Denon (for the most part) and Onkyo is very similar. The Rotel will be better sounding, but will not decode the new surround sound modes. You would need a BD player that decodes internally, then outputs via analog, that is assuming the Rotel has multi-channel inputs.

Is it better than the Denon 2308?
I just realized you were referring to the Rotel not the Denon when you mentioned used. In that case, I'd take the 2308 hands down.

Just be aware that you should always buy Denon or Onkyo from an authorized dealer. If you buy either one off of eBay, it means no warranty for you.

I just put a 2308 in my office setup that is powering 4ohm Beringher studio monitors and it works beautifully. Two things to realize with this unit however, it does not decode the new HD codecs and it does not have pre-amp outputs. Other than that it is a very solid and great AVR...

I just noticed that the receiver is a refurbish that's why it's so cheap. The reseller is a authorized from Denon (check from the Denon site) and have 1 year warranty.

Now, how about Denon 2308 vs Onkyo 705?

you can go to dakmart.com for the Denon, and Accessories4less.com for the Onkyo. I bought my Marantz from a4less, and I recommend them. I really don't think you could go wrong with any of these products, there just isn't that much differentiation unless you aren't getting hi-def decoding or room correction. If I remember correctly, the 2808 has a pretty decent one.

Don't worry about the video processor in receivers. They only matter if you have a crappy DVD player or VCR player plugged into your receiver. Most average or better blu-ray/hd-dvd/dvd players will offer better vp performance than a receiver. I wish they'd just strip them out of receivers.

Thanks for all the inputs...

I just found out that a local dealer has Pioneer Elite VSX33TX for CA$399 on their demo model. Is it worth it? Or should I buy refurbish Denon 2308, New onkyo 606 or used Onkyo 705?

all things being equal, buy locally. If you ever have issues they are right there to take care of you, plus you can start building a relationship with them. Some things are worth a few extra bucks.

In this price range, I'd go with a new HK 254 from JR. $389 shipped.

Personally I would take the Onkyo or Denon over the Pioneer. Onkyo's *05 line was alot of bang for the buck and the 705 has a stout amp section with some nice features like Audyssey MultiEQ XT (which is an awesome feature to have at that price point). The Denon has the standard MultiEQ but its amp also measured very well in the review done here at Audioholics (if you haven't read that...do so)...

If you feel more secure with going local then do so. But both Dakmart and Accessories 4 Less are manufacturer recognized and established dealers of facotry recertified gear. Or if you want to bargin hunt you can do that as well...I picked up my 2308 for $275 shipped (for a unit that was a year old and in its box for the last three months...)

I've had my Onkyo for about two months and only selling it because of Tax issues.

It's in great condition and was bought from accessories4less. They don't sell the 705 anymore there. The 705 has a better eq system, decodes all formats, has a decent amp section, has pre-outs and a nice remote. I think if you can get one it's the best bang for your buck.

I would never buy locally. You will pay more and the support is usually shoddy at best. Sometimes you have smart folks help you, but often times they are no better at troubleshooting an issue than you. I prefer dealing with the manufacturer directly.

If you are interested you can always bid up to your price on ebay. You might just win it for a good price.

There are some Products that only have B&M distribution if you are buying new. In regards to support its all about who you choose to buy from. Sales, installation, and service create jobs.

Who needs installation for a receiver? All you have to do is plug it in, hook up the speakers, and run the auto setup.

I guess if that was the case someone would be out of a job  There are many that will not, or can not fool with it and hire companys to do so. Maybe the receiver has to be intergrated distributed system. Im sure there are several members that prurchase from B&Ms.
