I am new so Please bear with me. I just bought a samsung ln52a850. It is a great TV. Now I want a new reciever and blue ray player. I like the Onkyo 606,706 or 806 recievers so far and a sony blue ray. I have been talked out of what I always thought was the best ( BOSE ). I understand that the Sony Blue Ray BDP 550 has DTS Master audio and that my current reciever an old Kenwood 7070 will not play correctly so time to upgrade. One thing I would like to know is if I were to get the BDP550 would I still be concerned with the reciever having DTS MA or would the Blue take care of this? Also I would like to get the Klipsch Quintet iii set up to go with the reciever and blue ray that you suggest. I think I like the Onkyo 806 best but I will still be using 5.1 as I don`t care to run any more speakers I apprecaite any advice.

It appears your Kenwood has 5.1 mch analog inputs.

So, have the Sony decode, and use these analog connections (6 of them for 5.1). Your player will also do the bass mgmt (ya know, xover points).

However, if you feel like a new receiver, by all means, but just know you don't have to in order to get DTSMA.

Thanks for the quick answer. If I did use the Kenwood would I be giving up sound or picture quality. I know the big thing seem to be to use HDMI cables although I really don`t know exactly the difference is.

Definitely not picture quality. (unless you were talking about an expensive receiver that did video processing for standard def sources, otherwise, no).

Sound quality, the first thing I'd be concerned about, if building a new system, is if the Kenwood has a beefy enough amp. Now, I bet it would for many, many, many people, but if you want to really crank it, with tough speakers to boot, then that's something to consider.

There are other features as well too. This is impossible to answer. Either you want to try them out, spend money, or do your best with money in the pocket. I will NOT tell you what to do here. (and you don't want me to either, otherwise you might become poor very fast!). :p

Sure, use it when available. It's not always necessary by any means, however.

Are you sold on the sony Blu-ray? I'd seriously consider the new Oppo... The sound quality will likely be better than the Sony and it's an all in one...

In terms of a receiver, Josten is correct. You don't need to upgrade now, unless you want to. I have opted to upgrade to an older receiver that has no video scaling or audio over HDMI and will be running my HD Audio via 5.1 multichannel inputs. The difference will be very slight to begin with and with the receiver I purchased, I'm willing to bet it will sound better than almost any of the newer HD DSP receivers on the market.
