I have been lurking and researching subwoofers for some time.
I have a very large room (15x18x12high open to a larger area) but need a small home theater subwoofer (3cf or so).

The design Chris first suggested in the thread titled
Best Subwoofer for $300-$400?

Eclipse SW8200 12" Subwoofer
O Audio 500 Watt Bash Plate Amplifier
Dayton Pre-Fab/Pre-Finished 3.0 ft^3 sealed cabinet.

looks good. Has anybody built one yet? Do you have other recommendations.

I can't see where you could go wrong with it but realize your room is big and even one of those subs is probably not going to be enough.

I would recommend 2 subs for that size room for sure. Chris's suggestion is a great one as usual.......

I am trying to find a SW8200, it seems that it is discontinued?

Any good leads on where to find a new one?

Looks like you may have to save up for an Audiopulse LMS from PE ;)

I can get a better price than that, but it is still a bit over $200.00.

I plan on using the O audio 500w amp.
Will the Audiopulse LMS work as well as the eclipse?

I know I am asking for alot trying to fill a large room with high sound quality with a small subwoofer and low power.

Not really. I think you would fill that room easily with the right sub if you listen at reasonable volumes. You could even corner load it if necessary.

Boo to bandpass! :D

I feel that the LMS driver would do very well. A 15" driver (of very linear capability would perhaps be a better option, but also raises the budget as well as the enclosure size (in some cases).

What are the absolute max dimensions allowable???

With EQ (to flatten a response bump) an 18" Maelstrom-x could be crammed into a 3.0 ft. enclosure. The bump in response to correct wouldn't even be that bad.

I will play around with it later.

I am still searching for a SW8200.
Unfortunately the waf is the main concern.:(

The sub has to be small even 3ft is pushing it for corner placement (maybe I can build it as an end table next to the couch and go a little bigger). Cost is also a limiting factor I think I can get away with $500-$550. I was planning on building the box instead of buying the PE box.

I suggest not trying the end table thing. You will get an eye roll and if you actually tried to do it. I couldn't imagine the fallout. Your best bet is to work with the wife on every aspect get her full input. Tell her you want to build your own sub, because it's cheap. A fun project. And you want to build something that both of you will enjoy.

A DIY sub can be a lot of work so having not to hide your stuff will help. I actually suggest you ask her thoughts on the Kappa perfect build. You could use them as stands for the front bookshelves. and even build a nice shelf to match them at the front of the living from.

While non of us wants to compromise on sound wives can be great moderating voices on our decisions. Sometimes they can be the voice of reason in our quest for the best.

The above bandpass would fill the room and the surrounding areas, and the surrounding houses. It makes a great coffee table.

It might wreck your house though.

I reckon you could build the infinity kappa 12" build that's popular on here.

Check This out..

By the way, these subs are unbelievable. The 500 W bash amp will be fine, but you might consider a little more power. EP2500 or something... This thing handles up to 2000 watts...
