Need DVD player for stereo amplifier

I am looking for a DVD player and have some questions.

I have been searching for what would be good specifications for audio
and video components; I didn't have a lot of success. I would appreciate
referrals.
An article I read said to look at these specs for CD audio playback:
1. Frequency response
2. Output voltage
3. Signal to noise ratio
4. Lip sync. Is this a big problem?
5. Tracking

I don't know what to look for in these.
I would appreciate help with this. Is there any other things I need to
consider?

I'm new to DVD so I'm not sure of all that I need, but will need
something that plays recordable DVD & CD, and DivX, Avi
I also want to use the DVD player as a source for CDs, so I would like
good sound.

I will be using this with a stereo amplifier for 2 channel audio.
Don't need something for high definition.

I would like to hear suggestions on players. I would like to get
something for around $100 if that is possible. Do I need to spend more
for my needs?

Thanks.

A stereo amplifier or a stereo receiver? The difference being a receiver has a preamp section while an amplifier does not. You cannot hook most players directly to an amp.

Specifications will only tell you so much, and won't tell you much about build quality or features, so I'd get out and listen to some players. $100 is a bit low. The cheapest thing I would easily recommend is the Oppo 980 at $169. It is a solid all around player. Not sure about AVI, but it will do DivX. www.oppodigital.com

Yes and no about the difference between a stereo amplifier and a stereo receiver. I assume you were referring to a stereo power amplifier. If not, the difference is a built in tuner in the receiver. Anyway this part of my post is irrelevant to what the OP wanted to know.

Indeed $100 is low for a DVD player.
