Dishnet external hard drive.

Is any one using an external hard drive to expand their Dishnet DVR recording space?
Dish has a couple of recommendations on their site, but the prices, around $150, seem a bit high. Can any one suggest a cheaper alternative?
Obviously it needs to be USB, but will any ol' hard drive work?

I have the VIP722.

No problems to speak of...?

Just a direct hookup for this unit... does it automatically detect the drive..?

That is an awesome price for that HD...

When you post a positive answer.... I am clicking the buy button.. :)

Cripes, for that price, if thats a SATA drive in there,I'll buy 2 and just open one up and pop it into my PC... :D

Haven't had a single problem. There is another Fantom 1TB drive for less than $100 on Newegg, but it doesn't have as good of a customer rating. You may be able to find it cheaper, but Newegg is a very good company to deal with.

The only thing you'll need to do is activate the external drive through Dish. They charge a "one time" fee that's between $30 and $40. But it's worth it. HD material can eat up harddrive space.

Dish recommended a harddrive no larger than 750GB, but there are many user that have 1TB drives with no problems. The Dish receivers will still use the space wit no problem. I think when the manuals were printed 1TB drives weren't readily available.

I use a Western Digital My Book Essential 2.0 500 GB USB external powered HD I got off fleabay for 75.00. I use it on my VIP211 to convert it to a HiDef DVR with no monthly DVR fee - just a one-time $39.99 activation fee - works fine. :)

Is the charge per receiver? I have both a 722 and a 622, was thinking about getting one for each...

Does the Fantom come with a usb cable? Or do I need to order one of those as well... May as well get them at the same time if it doesn't...

thanks buddy...

The charge is per account.
http://www.dishnetwork.com/receivers/expandYourDVR/default.aspx

"You must activate your DVR Storage service. If the hard drive is compatible, you
will see a pop-up message on your TV screen asking if you want to activate the DISH
Network DVR service by calling 888-241-2205. You will pay a one-time archiving external
hard drive (EHD) activation fee, which covers all ViP DVR satellite receivers on your
account."

The Fantom drive comes with the USB cable.

Another nice feature of the Dish DVRs is you can archive on the external HDs to store movies/shows for your collection so if your drive gets full of stuff you simply must save you can get another HD and start your must save collecting again. And if you have more than one DVR on your account you can move the HDs from one to another relatively easily.

Also the latest firmware upgrade which is currently spooling confirms/allows usage of 1TB external drives.

Ordered 2 for both my recievers.... thanks guys....
You're welcome - glad to help. Another tip - the best way to have a smooth activation and format of your external HD is -- When you connect it and the prompt comes on screen - call the number while the message is still on-screen and have your account number ready - you'll get an automated system (at least I did). It will then start formatting the new drive right away and the whole process took only about 5 mins or so on the phone altogether - YMMV. ;)

It's about the same price. I read a couple reviews where they said it was noisy. I have enough things making noise in the theater and didn't want another, so I went for the Fantom. Since I bought mine the prices of all the other brands have dropped to about the same price.

BTW- How did you get them to waive the fee???

Thanks. I still may bite on this one. I like the look of it. It's black. cool blue light:eek:

My issue with Dish is the fact that we don't get the big four networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX in SD, only HD. (We can't get sat #110.)
Silly as that may sound it this causes a problem considering how much we record from these channels.
After playing the 1/2 hour "let's go through the DVR set-up/menu" game with the rep, I used this as leverage to get the fee waived.
