So I heard some 7002's last night at a Magnolia. What a mistake that was. I mean I'm still happy with my mildly modified and EQ'ed Infinity Primus 360's but not as happy as I was yesterday. I was with my g/f so I didn't have a chance to give it a bunch of time but I did hear some Martin Logan Electrostats that were in excess of $1000 a piece. I didn't get the price on the 7002's. I like my Infinitys better than the stats. Not a fair comparrison but there it is. They also had some Vienna something or anothers but I didn't listen to those. That's probably for the best.

Damn Def Techs. If I ever get a chance to hear some big boy Paradigms I'm gonna run in the other direction.

One look at the price of those DT 7002 would make you appreciate your Infinity's much more. (around $4k/pr)

I always shop at Ultimate Electronics because I always walk into a great deal. A year ago I walked in as they were unpacking some DefTech BP7001sc, well they had the Cherry end caps and they ordered the Piano Black so they put them on sale (underpriced for 1,000/ea. I walked up and said I had exactly 1,600 cash in my wallet (I did I was speaker shopping) and said you drop the price 200.00 each and I'll take em. The salesguy talked to the manager who agreed and I walked out with a brand new pair for 1,600 (tax inlcuded). Also picked up a Denon 4802R brand new for 400.00 in 2002 at same store (retailed for 2,200 six years ago) because it didn't have the remote, manual or patch cord. Somebody misplaced them during inventory. I have a universal remote, downloaded manual off Denon website and they found the patch cable before I left the store. Always haggle and bring in internet prices and you can always get comparitive prices.

post script to that story, a year later a buddy of mine over at S&V forums walked into a pawn shop and found the 4802's remote and shipped it to me and I sent him the money for what he paid for it. $5.00

LOL, nice score! I haven't really taken the time to listen to Def Tech yet, even though I have been meaning too. The last couple of times I've been up to the Magnolia store they have had the 7006 on the floor which are about the only model I could probably afford. They would draw my interest more if they updated the looks of the BP700X line.

Change the EQ to your preference. Might not be perfect but you'll save money. :)

If your Magnolia is like the one near me, the room is very treated. What would your infinities sound like in that room?

Still, it's always nice to have new speakers.

I found the 7002's to be $2,400 shipped but that's a lot for me. Then you gotta get the center and some subs which are better than what's already in them ... ugh ... I'm thinking more along the lines of some more Infinitys but more modifications.;) Nothing right now though. I'm still out of work and like Rick pointed out this is getting to be more expensive than smoking.

BTW, I was only in the store to pick up this laptop. Kind of minding my own business when I got accosted by those bad speakers. My g/f would sh!t if I ever said anything about buying the 7002's. She knows I like 'em. I'll bring it up at dinner.:D

Alex if you do decide to get the Deftechs check out 6th Ave .com for the last two weeks they have had the Deftech Studio Monitor 350 and 450's for 248.99 (50.00 shipping if you can't walk in) they have the same mid range and tweeter as the 700X series. I picked up the 450 to match my 7001sc and the Studios normally retail for 650.00/pair. Deals can be found. And ebay always has the CLR2002 for a great deal (I got a brand new one for 250.00 a year ago.

Alex i agree the subs in the 700x series are not the best. My 7001sc claim they can get down to 18Hz (yeah when pigs fly) they drop like a rock after 30Hz and sound bloated. I just cross them over at 40Hz (lowest my Onkyo will go) and the bass tightened up (alot) that and my SVS NSD 12/2 and the bass is very well controlled and room filling. But yeah you have to cross over the built in subs to 40Hz otherwise the bass is pretty bad.

MatthewB,

I'm tapped. No more nothin' for some time to come. I'm so poor I can't even pay attention.:D I just wanted to share my very first experience with anything of that calibur. I'm not a kid either, it's just that you don't bump into this stuff every day and my audio appreciation classes started not much before I got on AH.

Wait until you go into some specialty audio stores and test listen some B&W 801's You'll think of selling your kidney, blood or sister to afford a pair. ;)

Just get them. You know you want to. It's a sickness for which there is no cure.

Or you can get the best of both worlds like I'm doing and have a pair of Infinity's slightly modifed with a superior 8" sub built in.;)

Your idea of 'slightly modified' is so far removed from my reality that it's scary. That reminds me to take a look and see if there's anything new going on in the Man Cave. I've had this idea of modding some 362's by adding to the outside. At this point it's just a thought.

Next time I get around some serious speakers I think I will bring my own tunes and something to take notes with. Auditioning speakers might become a hobby in it's own right.

Bandphan, hence my suggestion for crossing them over at 40Hz. As with all Deftechs whatever the webiste says the frequency range is say 24 Hz-30kHz, always double the lowest range and that would be the proper crossover point so the speakers sound it's best.

My 7001's rated 18Hz-30kHz, doubled it's 32Hz (about the point where bass drops like a rock, so i cross over at 40Hz)
Studio Monitors rated 24Hz-30kHz, doubled should be crossed over at 50Hz I cross em at 60Hz.
CLR2002 32Hz-30kHz, doubled is 64Hz, I cross em at 60Hz
Mythos gems rated at 60Hz-20kHz the gems -6db point is at 137kHz so I cross em over at 120Hz (and that's pushing it, i should cross over at 150Hz)

Even though the towers come with built in subs, they really should be considered great mid bass drivers instead, use an outboard sub for real deep bass.
